| After reading here for quite some time i had decided (tentatively) of moving to Busan. Then after speaking with someone about what I desired, I learned that Busan is a lot like Seoul, and being close to the ocean is only not really realized. Like being an hour inland in LA. Anyway he suggested Pohang, but I understand that is a smelting and very polluted city. He also mentioned Gangneung, Masan and Mokpo. I have done some searching through those cities, and seen some good things. Throw me some goods and bads. I like coastal cities (I currently live in Santa Cruz, CA) I also don't want to be out in the sticks away from any westerners at all. I am bringing my dog with me, and want a place that is friendly to that, not hungry for it. I am a drinker, but not a nightclub dance feind. I like clean air. I am not too picky, but I want to land in a great place that I will enjoy. Thanks for your help. |

| I live in Haeundae Busan. I can see the ocean from my window and walk there in about 5-10 minutes. There's a park about two minutes away for my dog. There are a lot of foreigners in my area and a few western bars. Sure parts of Busan suck, but if you do your homework , you can find a place thats great and feels nothing like Seoul. I would suggest you look at Haeundae or Gwangalli/Kyunsung,Pukyeong Uni areas. Both are very close to the beach and have a good number of westerners and bars around. |

I am from the West Coast of Canada and like you thought of a coastal city, quickly discounted Pohang and Masan because of their air-polluting industries, Ulsan as well, but decided Busan was too big, so chose wisely nearby:
Geoje Island! 
There are two bridges on the west coast of the island to the mainland at Tongyeong and three ferry terminals to Busan (45 minute trip right to great downtown Nampodong, Busan... a faster trip than from the suburbs of Busan to downtown! lol) on the northern and eastern coasts.

The air is clean, not a smoke stack around.
I also think Tongyeong and Yeosu are excellent alternatives, though the former is farther from the beaches and the latter is farther from other places, making for longer weekend trips. |

| I don't recommend Pohang if you're looking for fresh air. |

I realize this and I know santa cruz will always be here. I am origionally from Indiana, and am going to spend 2 1/2 months there before heading to Korea. That should aclimate me. I am used to going into the unknown. I have moved without many connections to Breckenridge, CO, Denver, LA, DC, and even Santa Cruz. I understand that it will be much different, but I am doing as much research as possible. I want the difference. I am not getting any younger. I have been to every state in the US, I have been to Mexico and Canada. It is time to go asian. What better place than somewhere that is a bit more difficult, but financially profitable? I am sure everyone who made the leap across the Pacific has a different agenda. I am not overlooking the negative, but instead just focusing on the positive. I thank everyone who has been nice on this message board. I have been a member of another board for years, and although newbies are treated nicely for the most part, it can be a crazy experience for them. Thankfully I have recieved many positive and helpful PM's. (I will reply when I am granted the ability). I think Korea will be great for me. What could be the worst? I return to the states. I can get a good job, I have excellent qualifications in teaching and in sales. So lets party down in this crazy country. |

1. Busan
2 Tie. Geoje and Tongyeong
I live in Mokpo and it has nothing really.
Geoje has a ton of foreigners because the Samsung and Hyundai shipbuilding there, but it's still a very small city. Also somewhat expensive.
But really nothing (within Korea) compares to Seoul. Everything else is a truck stop compared to Seoul. |

| I live on Geoje, and it's pretty nice. There's the ocean, beaches and mountains, but the dense foreigner population in Okpo is great too. You can eat at Quizno's, get Costco products, watch English movies, etc. etc. It's a bit of a sausage fest, (I am a woman and don't see any other "foreign" women my age), but guys make friends easily, and people don't stare at mixed couples as much as other places. I lived in Daegu for 2 years and was always sick from the air pollution. I haven't had a problem on Geoje yet, and I've been here for 9 months! |

You my friend are where I want to be! How much longer do you plan to stay in that area? Are there a lot of PS jobs available near there? |
