Hi all,
i'm trying to find a job in/near seoul. maybe because of my background i'm getting more rejections than engineering jobs that pays alot more here...
Basically - i'm from an indian background and been here in Australia for about 20 years now. English has always been my first language from kindy. i don't believe i have any "indian" accent in me
Any tips/ advice/ help in getting a job would be greatly appreciated...

Hi - I'm not clear on this. You are not being selected for ESL jobs but are being selected for engineering jobs. Are both job locations in Seoul? |

Rather than your ethnicity, it may have to do with the fact that native Koreans seem to fall into two main job categories: farmer, or 'engineer'.
What kind of an engineer are you? I know lots of foreign engineers 'down south' in Korea (shipbuilding and repairs) - mostly Europeans (all nationalities), but a few Indians as well. |

| Where's your passport from? And your degree? If your passport is Indian, rather than Australian, I don't believe you'll be able to teach in Korea. Ditto degree. |

Irregardless of your lingustic skills, if your passport is not from one of the "approved" 7 countries you CANNOT get a visa to work here as a teacher.
Rejection is assured for this reason alone.

sorry i didn't spell it out properly...
i was meant to say that i got engineering jobs offers in australia.
i'm not applying for engineering jobs in korea but would love to if i could get one there... tried a few but the issue with language barrier pops up.
i'm a electrical engineer but now more specialised in traffic, ITS and communications. Also hold a IT degree...
with teaching jobs, it goes as far as the recruiter and then rejections everytime they send my details out to a school.
did grade 9 to university here in australia.
Got an australian passport but doesn't seem to be enough for the schools.

Try applying for public school jobs.
The fact is - in Korea, when a hogwan owner (and recruiters working for hogwans) look at your picture and see dark skin, you are summarily rejected. It's not right, it's not fair, but it's true. |

| You can't get accepted due to your immigration status. Move along. You may lobby for change if you wish but for now, your paperwork will hang you for an E2 teaching visa. |

Yes, I know SBS (among other yards) is looking for qualified people. However, I'm not sure you would want to do the job. The vast majority of guys I know HATE it and can't wait to get transfered out of Korea. |

i want to go to korea one way or another. hopefully i'll get a teaching job. but if not i think i can try out at the shipyards. it'll be a good learning experience.
Cruisemonkey, would you be able to pass on my information to them or have the company's contact details?

The rules are native speaker from the five countries. I knew an Argentinian Aussie with blue eyes. He was forcibly hauled off by uniformed men. |

Nonsense. I have friend here who was born in Turkey and has a dual turkish/australian passport. He had, and still has, no problem working here in Korea.
It comes down to picky hogwan employers, who usually aren't worth the time of day. Ditto the suggestion about public school. Less likely to be that picky because of ethnic background. |

Hi - I'm very certain the rules are native speakers. I think your friend got under the very loose wire of enforcement. How they define native speaker is spotty. They can decree by just a voice test, they can decree by immigration status, depending on said passports contained documentation on naturalization.
I stand by my assertion. |
