This album of theirs, Hymns for a Dark Horse, has got me sucked in. I don't usually take to simple sonic albums without something interesting going on, but this one just has me at first taste. Maybe the obsession will pass, because usually I don't particularly like albums the first time I hear them, and there is then no correlation to how much I like them down the road. It's actually pretty simple, the singer has a voice and delivery that I take kindly to.
The story of the band is pretty interesting, but not at all related to why I love the album's sound. If I read right, they're building their new house together with almost no power tools (they have a chainsaw for cutting logs in half). They use solar energy.
I found them on Daytrotter, which is coming close to usurping the kexp djs as my favorite source of 'made it' indie bands. Gotta love free, live, legal mp3s. Can anyone recommend any other good blogs that aren't full of music snobbery but full of good music? I'm very thankful that the music community has become so digital, now that I'm so far from home. |
