Can anyone suggest a good place for a couple to stay that won't cost an arm and a leg. We're looking at finally taking our honeymoon trip in late January.
There are so many hotels there, and many priced higher than anywhere I've seen in the world, that I don't know where to start.
Are packaged deals the way to go?
All suggestions welcome. We're going to stay 3 days.

What island?
I can't recommend a good hotel, but you have pretty much 2 options: On the beach or a regular hotel = pricey, or in a hostel/hotel with a private room = $50 and up.
The most important thing to do is get away from the hotel, even a nice one. Hawaii is full of wonderful gems that so many people never see because they get so comfortable in their hotel. I chose to travel around all day and just sleep at a cheap hotel. But if you really want to relax and stay in pampered comfort, go for the pricey hotels that pull all the stops. |

| Royal Grove Hotel (website with same name) is 1 block from the beach/OLD but clean & safe...AND if you are hankering for Korean BBQ (next door they got it!) |

Manago Hotel is old and charming, cheap, no frills.
Also plan a couple of nights at an "older" (thus much cheaper) resort such as the Royal Kona. It's worth it. |

Ha! I stayed at the Manago b/c all the hostels were booked for the Ironman. It is a good deal for $25 on the Big Island. I walked down to the hidden Capt. Cook monument, went snorkeling and saw my first Moray Eel there.
If we are talking Big Island (and I doubt that's where OP is headed), 5 km south is Arnott's Lodge who offer budget rooms and one of the only legal volcano tours that can take you safely through a lavafield. I hooked up and traveled with a hot British bird there, only to relive some of those experiences years later in Britain. |

I stayed there and liked it a lot.
In other words, I'll strongly second Royal Grove Hotel. |

Why do you doubt that's where we are headed?
Isn't "Big Island" also where the Honolulu International Airport is? |

No, that's a common mistake. Oahu is the island with Honolulu. "Hawaii," or "The Big Island," is the furthest island East. It is very big in comparison to the others, and much of it is still very local and unpopulated. |
