How many pull-ups should a 40-and-something year old be able to do? That is, the optimum physical fitness exercises like push ups, pull ups, jogging distance etc? Anyone know the average PE measurements for age and health?

What's more, there are two kinds of pull ups, but I've forgotten what these two are called. Anyone know?

I wonder if I'm up to par.

Ten wide grip overhand pull ups is considered a good benchmark. You should pull up until your chin is OVER the bar and without your lower body leaning forwards. You should lower until FULL arm and shoulder blade (scapular) extension. Movement should be slow and not jerky or rushed.

40...? I'm 31, have been working on them for three months and can now do 5 in one set before failiure in that set....

Shoulder width grip, underhand (palms facing you) chin ups are somewhat easier. 10 of these with same good form as described above is considered pretty decent.

With regards to push up's I'd say 30 would be considered okay, 40, average, 45 slightly above average 50 pretty decent....

But I'm not sure though.

Go to the army website and you'll find details there. I remember that 10 pull ups was considered as a requirement to pass the physical test I think....

It amazes me when people ask for health information on Dave's. Buddy, try and find a fitness trainer or physiotherapist or a doctor or someone who is a PROFESSIONAL. So if I tell you I can do 1,000 pushups per day, you will try to do that? WTF?

I believe the korean national fitness test go's something like

10 minutes of backwards walking on a treadmill at 3.2 km an hour
12 minutes of jiggly belt machine at 90% jiggliness
50 studded hula hoop twirls
6 times bench press at 30kg's (men only)
All to be done with ciggarette breaks between each exercise.

With all due respect you ain't gonna get a six-pack or develop a svelte frame at your age. I'd focus on your diet, throw in some cardio when the sky is actually blue, and watch your cholestrol (again, diet diet diet).

I'm no expert but my gut tells me emotional well-being is more important than chin-ups, sit ups, etc. The garbage locals eat here wreaks havoc on one's cholestrol and blood pressure ... thus the receding hairlines, bad-complexion, etc. etc ..

There's a saying in US that 40 is the new 30. In Korea, 40 is actually 50. You age in dog years here.

Good luck

With regards to push up's I'd say [] 40, average

Either all your friends are monsters or your idea of a push-up is very weak.
You should be on your toes, back straight in line with your legs, going from chest touching the ground to fully locked out in a controlled motion. Preferably on your knuckles.

I'll probably sound like a *beep*, which isn't my intention, but:
When in TKD shape (but not lifting) I can usually do about 45 like this, and I'm skinny, but fairly strong for my size, so push-ups are easier for me than most people. Most of my athletic friends can barely make it past 30. No way is 40 anywhere near average. Even if you take out the fat people I bet the average for a 40 year old is less than 15 REAL push-ups, and I would consider 30 to be quite good. [/i]

Dude, I know what a good push up is, thanks.

Secondly I've been doing em for over ten years on and off. Haven't done em for a couple of months but could drop down and give you 40 now, no probs. Would get out of breath sure, but could do it.

Hell we had a competition with my ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS the other month in a class we were doing on comparisons (I am stronger than you etc..)

Around half of the kids were doing good form push ups between 30 - 40 reps...

I do see your point though - that of most average non atheletic 40 yr olds, 40 would be very hard indeed, as would 20 no doubt...

I think was more giving figures more for the relatively active amongst the qautrogenian population...

Yeah 20 for an average western 40 yr old would be good...

What? I'm fat but can do at least 50 army style push up's in 30 seconds. Your friends aren't athletic if they can't make it past 30.

Nope, not bullshit. For the record, i weigh in a 111 kg's and can easily whip out 50 army style push up's in 30 seconds. I did play a lot of sport as a youth and have been semi consistent with weight training the last 12 months.
