I finally got a computer that's capable of running everything I want (thanks Mr Park!!!!!!!!!!) but I have no idea what software I should request. This morning the computer teacher was asking me what 'necessary programme' I need and I wasn't quite sure how to respond. I know that with my old, slow computer about 1/3 to 1/2 of things I wanted to download didn't work. What software do need for things you use?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Are you talking about programs to use in class?

I'm thinking the basics: Microsoft Word and Powerpoint, the god-awful Hangul program might come in handy someday (but not for TEFL documents), an Internet browser, a flashmedia player, etc.

for handouts you need MSpublisher - best layout program available. No learning curve and does a damn fine job.

I'm not sure exactly what you do, OP, but here is the software I use most often (in order of frequency of use):

1. PowerPoint
2. MS Word
3. Karafun
4. Gom Player / VLC / Mediaplayer/ etc
5. MS Publisher
6. Adobe Acrobat Professional (for merging documents more than anything else)
7. MS Excel (rarely--maybe once or twice a semester for grades, charts, etc)
8. Hwp Hangeul viewer (to view downloaded documents from the GPOE website)

If it's a brand new computer, then might I suggest downloading all of the basics first:

Acrobat reader, flash player, real player, firefox, audacity, photoshop elements or other photo viewing / editing program, winrar...

That's all I can think of. I hope this helps!

Thanks a bunch. Could you explain what # 3 and 5 do?

I'm sure others can do a better job explaining, but here goes:

Karafun is a (free!) karaoke program that you can use to make your own songs, listening tasks, cloze activities, etc. I've been using it for listening exercises lately, which is great because the text scrolls up on the screen and you can adjust the speed of the dialogs, have the students read, pair dictations, your imagination is the limit!

I mainly use MS Publisher to make award certificates, and occasionally brochures for summer / winter camp activities--since I don't use it that often, I'm not fully aware of what it's capable of...perhaps some others can chime in and talk about how they use the program!

Layout Layout layout.

Ever tried to position something in MSword. It never goes exactly where you want it to. That's because word is a word processor not a layout program. Publisher is the budget mans layout program (think InDesign, but cheaper and easier to use). I use it for all of my handouts with students.
