One of my CTs who I get on really well with and who I've been sat next to in the office for the last 3-months has just been appointed as the new Vice Principal at my HS. Obviously I'm happy for him as he's a good teacher and is respected by the others.

However, I've enjoyed a good degree of banter with him these past few months and just wandered how I should approach him now he's gone up a few rungs of the ladder. I got on well with my previous VP, but he kept himself to himself most of the time, especially at lunch times etc. I would normally have lunch and smoke breaks with the new VP and am now slightly worried about how I should now approach him/talk to him etc in light of his promotion. Do you think he'll feel obliged to distance himself from the staff as the previous VP did?

A newly appointed VP staying in the same school probably means you're in a private-public school.

How old are you? And how small is the city and school you are in? Anyways, I say notice how the other teachers react to the change. But, I think you'll still be able enjoy the smoke breaks with him. Mind you, he most likely will have more paper work and attend more meetings with the head honchos at the education office.

The town has a population of about 40/50,000.

The school is a boys HS with 180 students.

I think it probably depends on him. If you've had a good working relationship then there's no reason why that should change. Koreans to Koreans is where there might be difference in attitude but as a foreigner, we're not really included in the change of behavior when somebody gets promoted. As long as you remain respectful in the company of other teachers then I don't see there being a problem. I doubt his attitude will change to you. But the burping contests might have to finish though!

My Principal is always really good to have a laugh with. He used to be a English teacher so his English is very good. He says "you are my friend" He was joking about one of the other teachers being in love with me (female that is) last week. I could laugh with him about it but she went red.

Your town and school are small, and you're not some fresh out of college guy. The teachers are probably closer than teachers in bigger places. I think there is little you need to change when interacting with the guy. As mentioned above, just raise the respect level a little.

Yeah, that's probably about the size of it.
