I am curious to know what folks here are doing. I am staying personally. I got a girl here that I will eventually marry. I would do it sooner than later, but my school made CBC and Medicals mandatory as well. So were in no rush.
How about you? Whats up? |

| Already married, will stay would love to leave and go back home to Canada. I feel really bad for the e-2 people out there. This whole thing will affect every foreigner here. I think pretty soon seeing a foreigner will be a special thing again like when I first came here. But good luck to everyone who goes home wish you all the best. I people are staying wish them luck as well. |

I have been planning returning to Canada after the end of this contract next April but had been flirting with the idea of re-signing - since it was just a quick trip to the local immigration office until now - and give the hagwon owner a month or two flexibility to find a new teacher after which I could do some last summer travels in Korea or else a summer camp before heading home for good by the end of summer.
The hassle over extra paperwork, mail and possible extra trip to simply renew has NIXED the appeal of the idea of spending late spring and early summer in this country.
The new laws has simply re-inforced my original plan and cut off any temptation to stick around a bit longer. |

if they ever get around to setting the laws in stone, then I would make a decision.
I just got here, so I don't have to deal with this until October. By then I'm sure they'd have come to their senses.
So far, from what I've read today, it doesn't look like anything they've thrown at people for renewals would deter me. |

so far 50/50....wow...i didnt really think that this would deter that many people. I thought the numbers would be way less....Octavius, FYI you have to do a medical in Taiwan. Either way your plan sounds great. Sounds like you and your friends have it all planned out. And congrats on the loan being paid off! Good luck

I'm re-signing before the 15h, and hopefully by this time next year, immi will have wised up. Otherwise, it'll be a trip to Japan just to renew plus a criminal and medical. I better order my criminal by June of 2008 then. I have one coworker whose visa expires in Feb and another in March. They'll have to do all this to renew. What a pain! Even if they order a CBC now, it probably won't be done by Feb or March. They'll have to get a provisional renewal. |

It was always my plan to go home and get more quals in summer. What ever the new immigration rules are, I'm kind of grateful if they prevent me from returning. Mind you, don't take that the wrong way because I've had a great time, but returning to Korea would be a real cop-out. I seek a new challenge and with the quals I'm gonna get I won't need Korea 'for the money'.
Famous last words, I know. |

I know all about the medical in Taiwan, I have been getting medicals and HIV tests for years here in Korea. I also don't have a single mark on my criminal record.
These new regs are just the final push I needed to move on. I will have been here for 5 full years at the end of this contract and I am just tired of the nonsense. I'm tired of the Korean men who don't have the stones to tell their mom's that their q*eer and want to live on their own, I'm tired of being asked if I can eat spicy food, I'm tired of constantly having the rules changed and I'm tired of working in a classroom where there is no heat and the damn kids keep trying to open the windows because of "dirty air".
I have never lived in one place for more than 5 years, for my entire life, and Korea doesn't deserve to the winner in that race (old Shilo, Manitoba gets that prize and what a friggin' cold dump that place was).
I will say this, I'm not bitter, I don't hate Korea or Koreans. Despite the occasional rant of how when I own my own buisness in Canada (someday) I will put up a "No Koreans" sign in the window, I truly love the experience and friends I have made here.
That said, I am planning to make my escape and head to the sunny shores of Taipei. I can handle earthquakes and typhoons, just as long as I don't have anymore fingers jammed up my butt, unless I ask of course. |

| Luckily, I've been planning to return home when my contract is up at the end of Feb. My long term plan is to come back here after a year or so, so hopefully all this *beep* will have passed by then. |

| I just signed on for a second year at my school. I asked my boss about the new restrictions and she said since I'm already here staying with the same school I shouldn't have to do anything other than what would normally be done. |

Your a riot and I totally understand where your coming from....except for the K-dude part. I too have been here for 5 years. If things dont work out and for some reason I dont get my paper work together in time, I dont mind grabbing the girl and calling it quits..In fact, she wants out as well. Nothing against Korea, but after 5 years here there is nothing wrong this door being shut because a new one will be open.
Good luck Octavius....I hear the clubs in Taipei are great! |

After 7 years it's now to much bother. Working here with the lousy exchange rates and the new rules, no thanks. Labor is in back home, so a change will be a good thing. |

Same - same.... 7 years in and they still keep changing the rules as we go.
Anywhere else we would have resident status and not have to put up with this crap on an on-going basis YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR.
I just can't be bothered arsing with it all over again and again. |

I don't know.
I had planned two years here for the tax free bit but I just don't know.
I don't know how it will effect me. I will be finishing in March.
It could be the kick up the bum I need to actually go and do something else rather than pretending to enjoy teaching English to speakers of no other languages other than Korean |
