Has anyone ever gone over the 20kg limit coming from UK? Well, at least my airline says 20kg. It's bloody tight and hard to get a good amount of stuff in just around 15.5 (4.5 for the case weight) and 6kg carryon respectively. I'm curious if I'm going to be hit with a hefty fee for being 1 or 2kg over.

Depends on the airline. Ask them.

You must have bought some godawful damn cheapo ticket there...

I've flown (economy) to and from Korea many times and never had that problem... Have taken on at least triple 20kg...

When I flew to Korea from Australia my bag ended up weighing 28kg ... I had the same problem as you ... But the airline did only charge me excess baggage on the amount over 25kg ... So I ended up only having to pay on 3kg ... A few years ago when I flew to the UK from Australia was in a similar situation ... and they didn't charge me anything ... So in some ways in the end it may end up being luck of the draw ... And not guaranteeable ... I would say to be prepared for it ... and then wait and see what happens in practice ... The other side would be to compare what it would cost you to mail the excess things ... I know in some cases the excess baggage rate ends up being the best option ... Unless you can wait a long time to get the items ... ie comparing excess baggage to sending an airmail parcel

normally they allow up to 5kg extra without asking you to pay extra for it. Key is to get there early.

I am always over the limit - once I was 15kg over and no one said anything, but I also had a tiny baby with me and they just figured it was that or nothing... so they let me through.

Jesus they're reaming ya out good. Care to share the airline name so we can avoid it? ;p

When I took Horizon Air with connection to Singapore Air I had no problem bringing overweight items. Didn't get charged for it either. United didn't give me any problems for being over some, paid like 50 bucks I think but in all fairness that suitcase was damn heavy.

Only time I got railed on overage was when I went from BKK to ICN, and that's cause I had all my stuff I was bringin in from America. (Weight allowances when flying within asia are damn small)

Also the carry on might not get weighed. Don't put it up front for them to see. The only time they weighed mine was when I asked if I had to. Try to stuff that badboy with your heavier items if possible.

I flew Lufthansa when I came here, and I was allowed 20Kg checked, and 8Kg carry on. I did my best and got it to 32Kg (checked) and 12Kg carry on in a smaller suitcase.

They slapped a heavy sticker on the checked case, and warned me not to buy anything from Duty Free that would make my carry-on bag heavier and never charged any excess. I was also wearing 3 layers of clothes and removed 2 of them when I got through check-in (hence the reason for using a small suitcase as carry on). I bought a book in duty free and 1000 smokes, though I could have done without them as the saving was minimal compared with Korean prices.

If it makes a difference, I flew from Manchester and got to my flight nice and early Smile

Flying from the US, I am allowed two bags -- one was 8 kg over, the other was right on or maybe 1 kg under. It would have cost me $400 to put them on like that -- I moved some stuff around and the two bags were both 3 kg over (extra kg in my carryon) and the fee was $50...one bag way over cost a LOT more than a few bags a little bit over....

I regularly exceed the weight limit and have never once been charged. See, I usually have a classical guitar in a heavy hard case and that usually pushes me up into the 30kg+ range. Like someone else said, get there early and be very nice.

One trick that I've used when I'm well over the limit......

........When the check-in girl says you're over-limit and you should pay some ridiculous amout like 40 quid extra, pull a tenner out of your pocket and say that's all you have. Will that do? They should just accept it. They won't stop you getting on the flight.

Wear all your clothes, it's pretty cold anyway. Never had my carry on weighed so I put all my heavy stuff in there. Best tip is to just come early before the check in staff get all pissy.
