Hi there,
I have a buddy who just arrived in Korea about a month ago, and he's teaching in a hogwon with no other foreign teachers. I was wondering if anyone knows of some good places for him to go and meet other foreigners or friendly koreans to make his time there a little more bearable. If anyone lives in Namyangju, it would be appreciated if you could list some places to go or things to do there.
Thanks a lot.
(No flames please-this is an honest query) |

Unfortunately I can't help you out on this one, but hopefully someone else will chime in. Why doesn't you friend register on the site so he at least has some kind of contact with other teachers? |

Namyangju is a bad place. No one responded because no one stays there.
I'm serious. |

Good idea about getting him on Dave's. I'll get on that right away. He's brand new and hasn't yet discovered dave's-but then again, i was in Korea for a full 3 years before I ventured on to the site (Had no computer).
Anyway, Namyangju is bad, huh?
How bad is bad? Boring bad or unfriendly bad? |

I'm in Namyangju now...
it's not that bad - it really depends on how far you are from the subway, it's going to be about 2011-12 before the subway reaches the main population areas. Until then expect about 1 1/2 hours of travel time to get to say Itaewon and about 20-30 minutes from Gangnam/Sincheon. Not quite rural enough as pollution is still an issue.
My hogwan has six foreign teachers and we've just met about 4 more from the competition, I think we're going to Guri this weekend. Then there are a few public school teachers who hang out at Suyoki in Pyeongnae on thursday nights.
I know a couple hogwan head instructors trying to find more foreigners in Namyangju/ Hopyeon/Pyeonnae/Maseok so that people don't go absolutely insane. |

I used to work in Pyeongnae and Maseok.
In maseok there are several hogwons, so we met other foreigners by going round to them. Eventually there was about 15 of us that used to hang out in a couple downtown bars in Maseok.
In Pyeongnae theres really not much...its just a street, basically. |
