Ok then try this one for speaking...
Use yourself as the medium if they wont speak to each other.Get them to structure questions to you surrounding a riddle that you have written on the board that can only be answered by questions(not one word questions)
Get them to take notes about the answers to other peoples questions sotheycan build up a picture of whats going on.
Obviously jazz it up a bit by offering a juicy prize to whoever gets it.
Try this one....
A man lives on the 20th floor of his apartment building
Everyday he kisses his wife and takes the elevator down to the ground floor.
When he gets home from work he takes the elevator upto the 10th floor and then walks up the stairs to the 20th floor.
WHY?
Make sure you get everybody involved .Every middle school student will be able to structure some kind of question. |

Waggo, check out the Brain Boosters on the Discovery School site. Lots of lateral thinking exercises there. |

| Today I got them to read their horoscopes, then they had to write character profile and horoscope for a mystery student. Then they change them around, read them out and have to guess who the profile is of and who the forecast is for. Worked kinda well.. |

In my last ever middle school class we did some stuff about personality types - introvert/extrovert, optimist/pessimist and so on. It got a much better response than the usual textbook agenda of hobbies/summer camp/whatever. |

Another idea: i got good mileage today out of the animal game- basically 20 questions. first preteach all the anatomy of animals- fins, hooves, beaks etc, as well as where they live (forest, sea), and what they can do (swim, fly, jump etc.)
Model the following questions:
1)Can it (fly/run/swim?)
2)Does it live in the (ocean/river/forest)
3) Does it have (claws/wings/ a tail)
4) Is it (big/cute/dangerous)
Using the above questions and a variety of vocbulary they have to find out what the mystery animal is, and the person thinking of it just answers yes/no. The winner is the person who fielded the most questions before anyone guesses their animal correctly.
If eventually they tire of it, change it to guessing what it is- anything: a person, place, or thing.
Certainly gets them talking and passes the time.
WAGGO: I used your "20th floor" riddle, thanks for that- any more?
If anyone has more good ideas for middle schoolers, keep posting them up!!! This agegroup requires every tactic a teacher can find! |

Another good idea for middle schoolers- a translation competition. Give them some sentences written in korean, and they have to translate them into good english sentences. They definitely learn a bit about sentence structure with this.....
Please keep the middle schooler ideas coming if you have any more... |

I've had good success getting these kids to talk about school. Yep, perverse as it sounds considering all they do is study, a lot of their thoughts revolve around school & they seem to enjoy discussing it.
'Who's your favorite teacher? Why?' will usually generate earnest responses, or they especially like to talk about least favorite teachers. 'What would you change about your school?' can lead to some interesting ideas too.
Or try this approach: 'What subjects did you study today?' Zero in on one: 'So what did you study in science (or whatever) today?' These kids study some pretty sophisticated material & it can be a useful challenge for them to try explaining it in english. |

Nice one waggo & schwa, I intend to try both ideas.
Another idea which worked today is - wait for it- telling jokes.
I told one or two basic non- gratuitous jokes today. they got them- and came back at me with several korean jokes translated into english- really set a nice tone for the lesson. try it!
Any more ideas, keep them rolling!!!!!! |

On the animal theme, heres a fun & easy one:
Ask each student to write down any 3 animals. Then have them write 3 adjectives for each animal.
Then tell them the first animal represents how others see them. Have them read out their adjectives. Then, the 2nd is how they see themselves. Finally, the 3rd animal represents their true character.
Some good laughs almost guaranteed. |
