"The government should conduct an inquiry into the dangers of asbestos."

"The government should conduct an inquiry into the dangers of asbestos." Few asbestos victims have so far received damages, and Won was the first whose illness was recognized as a work-related disease by the Korea Labor Welfare Corporation, adding malignant mesothelioma to a relatively short list....
Korea only implemented measures over asbestos in July this year.

Concern for the health of asbestos workers was expressed as long ago as the late 1800s. The risks became more evident in the late 1960s, when workers who had been heavily exposed 20 to 30 years earlier showed increased incidence of lung disease. Occupational exposure is now strictly regulated by provincial governments.

On Wednesday, the government acknowledged that it had been aware, at least by 1976, that asbestos was a health hazard not just to workers, but also their families and local residents. The labor ministry issued a circular in May that year citing examples of sufferers in Britain, but the government took no active steps to correct the problem.

This thread for some reason reminds me of the earlier "Is Korean Food Healthy" thread. Consumers and the Korean Gov't both all realize asbestos is highly toxic yet and is widespread in most Korean subway staions. The irony is the persistent status quo; which results in Koreans dying. As a global citizen it horrifies me Korean Gov't is so slow to take action?

Koreans consumers and residents of Korea deserve better.
