Every so often I have a student, generally a man, refer to me as Miss Peppermint. It always makes me feel like a bordello owner. Laughing

Amazing how so many people have misinterpreted the question here.
But it has been answered by at least 3 people.
So is it short for "mistress" or "mister's"?
I kind of have a feeling the first is correct.

canuckistan, I just like the word 'mistress'.

Especially in a conversation in appropriate circumstances when I can say

"Yes, Mistress".

You are right....eish, I liked how I was taught...then again, was taught by English family, and we all know how they are.... Laughing

Anyhow, went into my lovely red Webster's Dictionary, and found that it is indeed an abbreviation of 'Mistress'

Oh well, off we go.

Shoosh!

It's also worth noting that "Mistress" used to be a polite word and actually was a respectful title.
