Can schools or people find out my e-mail address from these posts? Is my e-mail address hidden? A school discovered my posts and I will have to go under a new name just so I don't have these problems in the future. I am not badmouthing schools just seeking information.

They can't get your e-mail, they will have identified you from theschool name. If theyhad nothing to hide they wouldn't be bothered about you asking questions about them.

Unless your user name is similar to your real name there is no way a school can know that it is you posting here.

That is of course assuming they have more than 1 applicant for any given position.

Most hakwon directors can't read or speak English well enough to read here anyway. A few can but most can't.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I completely agree that it is not "bad mouthing" the school to seek information. I'm guessing that the owner discovered it was me b.c they did only have one applicant for the position.

It's interesting, though, because the particular thread that caused the problem is no longer on Dave's...

yes, that is totally uncool. I'm here just inquiring about schools and nothing more but what is the deal? You should be able to voice your displeasure as long as you're not libelous. These forums should be a reliable resource for teachers and newcomers looking to teach in Korea. Schools should be able to take a little criticism. It all gives me a sour taste.

Well that's the problem Beezo44, they don't want you to be informed. If they were in your shoes, they wouldn't work for themselves either.

Just curious: was it the SLP gig? I heard a story once about a guy getting taken to court for saying stuff about them here. Don't think it went anywhere (they were just trying to get him to drop a labor complaint).

No, it wasn't (not sure what "EG" is, I just know it wasn't them) ... And I was actually really surprised b.c they sounded like a decent place from the phone interview. I am kinda surprised that the thread isn't on the forum anymore, though. Although from a search I did find out that things like this happen...

I was fired illegally and posted on another infamous website about 3 years ago. Another foreign teacher narked me off(recognized the content) to the school. I had mentioned something about a Korean Teacher I worked with and he didn't like it. He probably hoped to get down her pants. Actually she was okay and ended up marrying a different teacher from New Zealand who took my job and moved into my place of residence.

He took pictures of me picketing and had no clue what the idiot Hagwon Directors(husband/wife) were like. He never spoke to me or asked me anything as to why I was picketing. I don't think he finished his contract, or at least he and her went off somewhere on "vacation"/to get married probably in New Zealand.

It takes a bit of intrepid sleuthing, but you can be outed in one of the following ways:

1.) If you post from your work's computer, the network administrator can view your postings during your prep time.

2.) If you post from your work's computer, and if you don't clear the search history on your browser, they can visit this website from your computer when you are not using it and see your username recorded on the login cache.

3.) If you use your user handle in many other forums other than Dave's where it may be possible to cross reference your identity with a simple Google search.

4.) If your user handle bears any similarity to your e-mail address on their records which can be sought through simple Google cross-referencing.

5.) If the Dave's ESL webmaster was bribed in L.A. across the Pacific in order to surrender your name (unlikely, but Dave's does have a policy in their TOS that your handle and IP can be surrendered to your ISP if you behave like an azz).

6.) Your hagwon boss may have called your ISP if you are using it under their name and asked what websites your IP is logged on to (unlikely).

7.) Your hagwon boss may have programmed your MP3 player to record your keystrokes. Never let your boss touch your MP3 player. He may be trying to access your keystrokes. It could be a trap.

Sometimes =

*tip*

try using a secure browser

even if you download it to your computer at school, when someone comes on after you (a k person) they'll go straight to IE and not even realize you use a different one

there's more than few out there.

one protected me quite well last summer at camp; it encrypted the isp so they didn't know who was warning folks away from WOOSUCK (pronounced YOUSUCK) university -

i've done editing of korean translated to english documents for alternative media here in korea - spying on employees is rampant, computer software included - in some cases, even a secure browser won't help - if they are determined, they will track you

in which case do safe surfing at work and keep your personal stuff at home or in a pc bong

*also* always use a different user name for every forum you are on - you should never use the same one twice for whatever reason

it's not really paranoia when they really are out to get you! take it from one who knows.

Cool

Or, quite simply, if you are the only applicant for a position at a certain school and you're stupid enough to post the time of your interview (I was looking for speedy advice/info) ... there's the tip off.
In my case, the responses to the contract specifics that I posted were not good. I think that the owner had more issue w. the 7 people that posted responses, but he only had MY e-mail address, so there you go.

Gotta know what you're signing up for, people.
