Ok so I have done the beaches enough in Thailand. After chilling out this time I am going to make my way north for about 6 days. It is how the timing of it all works out...

Anyhow, and recs on what to do up North. Looking for some daily adventure...hikes, rafting, elephant treking...
Thanks
DK

Good choice!!! Thailand just gets better and better. Chaing Mai is a good stepping off place for treks and you'll find those there but the real deal is the low price off-road motorcycles for rent at about $6 a day unlimited miles.

With the bikes, you can go anywhere and thats important because there are places that have access mafias. I tried to go to one of Thailands biggest waterfalls but the access road was 11 miles and there was only one taxi going in and out each day and the travel time were spotty. Other than that , you could go on a raft trip for a $100 but I preferred to just visit the falls for an afternoon.

Yea, get a bike!

So TB could you get the bike to the falls? Never thought about getting wheels but that sounds like a solid plan.

Yea, get a bike. It'll make sense right away. Thats always a high point of my trips to SE Asia. Everyone's on bikes. It took 4 hours by pickup-taxi
and we went past ...a stone age village on a hillside .. it was way back in the woods. The highway was about .5 mile from Burma. The minority groups are there as much as they are an attraction. You can go gawk at their exoticness.

Nam Tok Thilawsu near Um Phang. Thats where the waterfall is.

I had been ditching the south for sometime. I like nature so I go to the parks , the down south parks are best during the rainy season. The wildlife in the north isn't so good as they animals have been harvested but the trees and plants are still good.

Have a good time!

LP guide for on road.

Off road, common sense - no maps. Watch the time and the gas.

For that matter, anyone, Chang Mai is all good, but I dont want to be in a city for my last few days in Northern Thailand. What should I be doing in North Thailand?
Cheers...and to let you all know im taking all your replies into consideration...unless you get talking about lady boys!

Well, if you don't know how to score a ladyboy in Thailand, then you better keep your water wings on. It's kinda assumed that if you're going off the beaten path, then you probably already are on the up and up.

Mate I shiit you not, it's beautiful. If you are in that kneck of the woods then it would be a shame to miss out. Just my 2 pence, but I kid you not, it's one of the top places to visit in Thailand. This is non isaland related. If you want an island go to Koh Chang, and tell the taxi driver to head for Lonely beech. Priceless.

How's the weather and temperature in Chang Mai and northern Thailand during Winter such as in January and February?

I am going in the first part of January myself and probably will hit Bangkok first for a few days and then head to the southern islands for an adventurous chill out. I then might go to northern Thailand and definitely Cambodia.

I stayed in Chiang Mai for two months in a nice guest house not far from the Tapae wall (Moonmuang is the main western tourist strip ...)

The weather in December was very warm during the days, but cool at night and in the mornings (ranging from 90 - 60 degrees Fahrenheit)

All the big (and even many small) guest houses are connected with various tours - water rafting, elephant rides, hiking , hill tribe festivals...

Beautiful ancient temples and excellent crafts all over Chiang Mai. Some great - and many vegetarian - restaurants...

Traffic is kinda bad, though and there are too many motorbikes - saw a few major accidents ...

Also, make sure the guest house you pick has at least decent security to protect anything worth stealing left in rooms ...
