There's a similar thread in the Jobs forum but I felt this one belonged here.

Transparency international released its annual Global Corruption Barometer. I think some of you might have a good laugh at where S. Korea is (hint: they did better than Sweden, Denmark and Netherlands)

Tsk. What a joke. It just shows that Koreans have stopped thinking of them as bribes.

what do normal people pay brikes for here then? i think you failed to grasp exactly what they were coving in the article. Myabe business deals are corrupt but the ordinary citizens aren't paying bribes directly as far as i know. Its not like when i was crossing into cambodia the officials wouldn't stanp my passport unless i paid them a $2 bribe

I agree this country is corrupt as Christ, but in its defence has anyone here ever had to actually bribe a cop?

I agree with you that the study measures bribes in the context of daily life and doesn't focus on business deals. However, I do feel Koreans might have a different idea of what constitutes a "bribe."

From what I've been told by a various different sources (k-friends, books, etc.), it's still fairly common practice for parents to payoff teachers at the beginning of the school year so they'll give "extra" attention to their child. We all hear the stories about what goes on at the university level between students and professors and just last week I was told how a former coworker paid off her church pastor so he would set her up with a good man! Granted, most of these are not solicited bribes like you described in Cambodia and often they're not even cash but a bribe is still a bribe.

I'm not a Korea basher but I do feel that such a high ranking is a little hard to believe. I lived in America for over 20 years and have never bribed nor witnessed a bribe take place in the course of my daily life (with exception to my time in the restaurant industry where "pre-tipping" help secure a better table;).

How? I don't think I said anything that can be construed as "evian."
