So a friend of mine recommended a good tailor in Itaewon named CASEY. He has a shop right next to the arch close to noksapyeong station. I went in and he was a really nice old man. He was kind of pitiful and looked like an anthropoid with a kind smile so I felt at ease as I first paid 160,000 as a deposit and then 140,000 during the fitting. A week later when I went back to pick up my two suits (it was only 300,000 for two because this is FAMILY PRICE he said... to EARN my business so I can recommend others) ... he says his factory has burned down in an electric fire and he's in a mess. Please give him one more week and he's gonna have them ready. Then I proceed to call all week. No answer.

I show up on Thursday with my Korean friend to find a gang of people looking for him. The cops pretty much ignored me for an hour while concentrating on looking as cool as possible while they smoked and looked tough...then said I can file something if I want but it will do no good because this guy has already skipped town with over $50,000 US in orders, deposits, back rent, stolen cash, loans, and the whole 9.

When will people ever learn TRUST NO ONE here.
Call me cynical but as soon as I hear a newbie, and even worse an old hand say this, it's obvious the person is a fool and is gonna take it up the butt.

Given that Korea is lacking in effective bankruptcy laws, its seems as if this type of collect-and-run behavior is essentially the equivalent of Chapter 11 in the US. Essentially, I doubt most of these conmen don't actively seek to do so from the beginning, but rather assess their situation one day and decide its just better to not complete their orders and head out. The real question I have is: where do they go?

Sorry you got burned--when I was new I gotfitted for a shirt. It was a ripoff-material was something a Chinese peasant would wear (or wouldnt wear.)

But there are good deals there or so I hear and it the guy was there 4 years it would seem a good bet, Don't know why some are blaming the victim.

Old man Casey's pension wasn't cuttin it; he needed a retirement plan and found one tax free.

If you're keen on getting your moneyback just find a way to recoup it elsewhere?

Good deal on a suit is a shop in Samsung dong called, "Dainty."

You can get two suits for 380,000, and they do a good job.

I opted for one suit for 400,000, which was made of a higher-grade material, but the others are still well-made and look great.

Was considering getting two more, but I don't need them yet.

The woman doesn't speak English much, but she understands some. She's in her mid/late 30s, and was the first suit maker I've had that had me come back to try the suit on at mid-completion to double-check size.

We're happy.


I purchased one suit from one of the overpriced tailors in Itaewon (I say overpriced because the quality sucks) and I still have it 4 years later, but I don't wear it much. It continually falls apart at the leg seems, and needs repair 2 or 3 times a year, despite me not wearing it much. The material from the shoulder pads is working its way through, as well, so I have these little white balls of fuzz I constantly have to trim off. Pulling them makes more material come out.

Avoid the shops in Itaewon, as they all farm out their business to the cheapest shops at Chonggyechon anyway.
