English menu and allows you to play American games instead of the Japanese games. |

True, you'll get the base console in English, but you can only use NTSC-U games unless you get it modded.
I have a NTSC-J console; setting up up wasn't a big deal because there are translations available for the setup manual online. As mine is modded it will play English language games, burned and OEM.
Basic unmodded Wii NTSC-J systems are 240,000 won in Yongsan. If you look on www.playasia.com NTSC-U system are quite a lot [around 470,000 won] higher, plus whatever shipping and customs charges you incur.

Earlier this year Nintendo changed the chipset onboard their Wii consoles to a D2C chip. Mine is a D2B and can easily be modded using a number of modchips: I happen to have had the Wiikey installed: it's upgradeable and works flawlessly.
There is a modchip for the new chipsets available, also made by Wiikey, called the D2CKey.
Here's a link: http://www.wii-modchips.com/d2ckey.htm
and here's some more detailed info including a retail price:

It is actually made in Korea, but isn't available here just yet - probably early January. It is available in the UK, Netherlands, Germany and a bunch of other places. Google it, you'll find loads on it.
It will most likely be more pricey to get installed because it requires 30 soldered connections, whereas the Wiikey requires 6. I spoke to a few guys up at Yongsan last weekend; they are expecting it "very soon" and couldn't give me a solid price.

so basically I am understanding that the Japanese version can't be modded right right now, but they will have a version that can be modded coming to Yongsan in the near future? |

from what ive gathered, the latest japanese models have a new chip in them which means they cant be modded with the existing chips that they have in korea at the mo. but there is a chip out there that works, which should hopefully arrive in korea around january sometime..... |

No. The current consoles can be modded, you just can't get it done in Yongsan. If you get the D2C console and want to have it modded at Yongsan you'll have to wait until they get the D2CKey mod chips which will be sometime soon.
Or, you can order the D2CKey chip online and install it yourself if you are any good with PCB soldering. |
