there are lots of things we can do here that we can't do back home. little things that we used to be able to back home some years ago that can still be done without prosecution/persecution here. this thread is for all those little liberties that make life just somehow...sweeter.
i'll go first:
in korea i can buy beer on sunday mornings. not so in illinois.
if i want to, i can buy beer on sunday morning, walk outside and drink it in full view of everyone. back home this is a violation of "open container" laws.
if i want to go to the movies i bring in whatever "outside" food and drink i desire (within limits, of course). back in illinois they actually check you to make sure you ain't smuggling any drinks in. when i was a kid we had 8 kids in the family. we used to make our own popcorn and take it to the theater. those days (back home) are long gone.
yeah, parking in crosswalks is wrong...but it is invigorating to see them do that and not worry about tickets/getting their tires "booted". but, i am in the sticks.
street vendors. back home such is not permitted. there is something adam smithish about a sidewalk vendor selling adidas knock off jackets 50 meters down from the real "adidas" shop.
lots more. wanna add on? |

medieval? no. over-taxing with increasing bullying tendancies maybe. my property tax has tripled in two years. kinda messes up budgeting. |

Before it was stolen I used to drive my 오토바이 on the street, on the sidewalk, through public parks and off-road. All without a Korean driver's license. Nice. |

The open liquor thing is nice but let's remember that that's the norm in E. Asia. You can even drink in the open in Singapore(mind you, what you do w/the empty container is something to bear in mind). |

1. Buying liquor on Sunday is nice, but Sunday only comes around once a week. Better is being able to buy cheap soju. Where else can you tie one on for W2,000?
2. While it's good being able to take snacks into a movie theater, being able to go to a movie at 9AM if so inclined is real freedom.
3. My favorite is being able to ask to see any little boy's go-choo and not end up in jail. OK, I didn't mean that--it was a tasteless joke. But I do admire their relaxed, non-sexual touching. None of that hyper-sexualized nonsense we have at home. |

How about this: I can get drunk as a skunk on Friday night (or Monday night, Tuesday night), and no one will look down on me. In fact, they'll make excuses for me. Then I can puke all over the place (as long as its red, so they know I eat kimchi), and then when the police come, all they'll do is put me into a taxi and send me home. |

When did Illinois enact Sunday liquor laws???? I know Indiana has them, but are you talking Cook County here??
edit: Illinois is one of the few states that allow local communities to make their own Sunday rules. Both Cook County and Macon County (where I went to school) had relaxed laws. Hell, there were even drive-thru liquor stores in Macon County. |

Where did you short conversation go?
I asked you where you couldn't ride a bike w/out a helmet, you told me Canada. Now that's gone.
