I've been following the TI for the past few years. I've noticed that once again, the US is lower than it was the year before.
If we got rid of Bush, AT&T, the New England Patriots, and Mississippi we would be up to #4. Overnight.

I don't know anything about this 'corruption ranking' thing, but here is an article from last week's Toronto Star.

I read that article before starting this thread. The TI findings seem to contradict the Toronto Star Article (as well as my own general impressions of Korea) so I wanted to know what people thought about it.

...instead it's just become a flame war over a dumba$$ joke and whether or not I really am a sixth generation american.

My boss did it once. To not be harassed. It was either the school could be left alone or they'd come in, drag me out of class and put me thru the ringer. The kicker? He ended up just being a con man.

I know of at least three people off the top of my head who bought their way out of traffic tickets or DWI charges

i think the problem is that koreans don't consider something 'cheating' unless they get caught... 'cunning' (somehow konglishized into verb form) is considered an acceptable form of competition, and i doubt that koreans would consider 'cunning' to be corrupt, although i'm sure 90% of the rest of the people in the world would...

In America? By paying a lawyer to amend the charges or actually paying the police officer?

I can see how paying a lawyer to change a "Speeding" ticket to "Illegal Parking" seems like a bribe but it's actually done out of judicial efficacy...processing and monitoring all of the citations would put too much stress on the system. In the case of a DWI, when you pay a lawyer for help you hardly get off the hook. You still have your license suspended and take points on your license...
