It is nice to see that my "old" rig still has the power to obliviate even the newest of games!!!

Not exactly the most system intensive game out there right now. Actually, it's at the lower end of all the new games I've seen recently, being a 6800GT is Recommended.
Try your system out on Crysis or Call of Duty 4. I think you'll see some different results; at least for the video card. I know you dropped a lot of money on that card but it's old news. Time to upgrade cl!
However, ET looks like loads of fun from what I've played of the demo, which is much more important IMO than mega-graphics in a multi-player game. |

Your loyalty to your old rig is touching CL........
Truth is, Crysis would bring your beloved to it's knees.
I've just invested about a million in the latest components and can still only manage 50-60 FPS in Crysis. And that's on High settings! Not even Very High!! No AA either.
The talk on the web is that only the latest Quad CPU's combined with 300+ dollar GPU's, and fast RAM, can play Crysis at highest settings smoothly.
The envelope has been pushed quite far in this last quarter of 2007. Crysis is just the first of the graphics intensive DX10 games. More will surely follow.
If your system is pre-2nd half of 2007 then you will struggle next year to run the best games at even low settings.
Ironically, Crysis isn't even very good! It's okay, but not gripping. |

You guys kill me, sometimes.
We'll, I do have a profound attachment to this PC for many reasons. One, it was the first PC I built from scratch that really mattered. Two, thinking about my PC reminds me of you guys, the handful of us that hang out in the Tech. forum and the buy-sell-trade forum. You all really do help when one needs it, and you do it in a good fashion. Three, I spent so much money on my rig almost a year and a half ago that it is difficult for me to just "let go" and upgrade my video card (that new 8800GT with 1gig memory is looking mighty fine!!! ). All in all, this rig has a lot of sentimental value attached to it; it shows in my bi-weekly cleaning of the insides, maintaining the harddrives, virus and spyware scanning on a weekly basis, etc. It means a lot. |

Dude, my 'lowly' machine passes every system analysis site out there. It's like running prime or other benchmarks; they aren't real-world and in reality, they don't mean near as much as firing up the game.
There are system requirements put out for every game; they are the true tale of the tape. Again, its where the rubber meets the road that determines the speed. |

Those fluckers are constantly...CONSTANTLY pushing us to buy $300 cards every six months! However, I only see any major graphics advancements every two years or so!
I hate 'em!!! |

Yeah, tell me about it. 1.5 years ago, I bought my video card for (I think it was $399, I can't remember). It was the best out there in terms of gaming GPU's. Now, there are at least 5 that are far better than mine. WTF?
Now, mind you, mine is still a high end card....well....somewhat. A 7900GTX with 512ram is going for around 169 on ebay.
Questions, should I get another 7900GTX and SLI it? |

I wouldn't bother SLI'ing it. The 7-series tech is outdated now. You need to get a DX10 card. |

The new ati one, 3870 I think it is, is the best high performance card for the money right now. |

Agreed. It's a bit like trying to stick an extra propellor on a plane to try to get more speed when you could just get one jet-engine.
Here's an article about sli-ing 7900GTX's.
http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/880/7/page_7_benchmarks_3dmark06/index.html
Only 6439 in 3Dmark06. The 8800GT can easily get 12000. The ATI HD3870 can hit 11000.
Another 7900GTX will only give you a 15-20% upgrade. A single new card will be roughly twice as powerful as two of your old card. |
