Hello,
I tried doing a search on this topic, but as we all know the search function on here isn't the greatest. To make a long story short, I have a friend in dire need of some professional psychological help. There has been a couple major events that have recently happened to him; one involving work and the other involving a relationship. Without getting too specific, he has undergone a complete 180 degree transformation. He is acting extremely unusual and is showing signs of delirium. We have a small group of friends who have been meeting with him on a regular basis to make sure is is OK, but it now seems like his well-being is beyond any help we can offer.
Has anyone had or known of someone who has been able to get help (English speaking of course) in Korea? I am at a loss of what to do, and need some advice on what to do to help him.
Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions. |

What happens to a foreigner who loses it here?
Are they shipped back to their home country or are they helped? |

I guess it would depend on whether the school found out about it. If they did find out about it, I guess it would go on a case-to-case basis. |

If they are that bad off, then the person needs to first find professional counseling, and most likely, just go home.
With the new visa rules coming into effect, if found out, he'd probably be denied a new visa if he wanted to stay, anyway.

Be careful with this guy. He resorts to meds too easilly. Please try Adam Gaines first. I've had experience with both 3 yrs ago and the latter helped way more. More of a behavior / cognitive therapy approach. Park just wanted to pump me up on anti dperessants and xanax (combined!!!) from day ONE....

Please only use Park if your friend NEEDS MEDS and doesn't think talking approach would be enough... please, please....
It's a tough call and if he's really having panic attacks and is so depressed that he can't hold it together - then meds is the first step combined with talking therapy until he calms down enough to get of the meds. But if he can hold himslef together okay, the talking approach could see him through it...
I was so F*cked up that I needed meds but then switched to counselling (A.G's domain) rather than phsychiatry (Park.) and that helped much more.
Good luck helping your mate out but remember - home (if it's a happy place for him) could be the best place to sort himself out if he's moderately to severely depressed....
If it's mild depression / anxiety - councelling could see him through it.
And if he does take the meds route, advise him to take the absolute minimum possible and build up from there if need be. I once got through a pretty bad deppressive episode on just two weeks of half an anti depressant pill from a local doctor (a mere 5 mg's) rather than the 20 mg Park might have had me on. Never had an episode since and that was around 18 months ago.
Do not be put off by meds horror stories, they CAN if used carefully and mildly - get people through a rough time, kind of help them ride the storm through.
There is another councellor who I'll pm you about now. The reason for pm is that I will be slightly critical of him and wouldn't want to put the details on this site....
