i'm a canadian citizen and need to apply for a new passport, as mine expires in less than 6 months. i'm hoping someone else may have gone through the process recently.

i'm wondering about my visa. i'm working in seoul on an E2 visa. after i submit my current passport, the pages will be clipped and it will be rendered useless. is my working visa transfered to my new passport? do i have to go to a korean immigration office to do this? what about my multiple re-entry stamp? will i have to pay for another?

also, from my understanding, the canadian consulate in seoul now sends the passports back to canada for processing. the website this will take at least 15 working days. anyone have any experience in receiving it sooner? (am in a bit of rush)

thanks for your help!

I did this last summer. I also posted a query which got good responses and if I remember correctly, I blogged a little about it in the thread. Try searching 'renew Canadian passport'. I'm between classes right now so I odn't have the time....

I'll be going in to pick up my new Canadian passport tomorrow. It indeed takes 15 days. I didn't ask about an expediated service. And I also didn't ask about the visa. I'm just assuming I'll have to take my new passport to immigration and get a new stamp.

I'll ask all your questions at the embassy tomorrow and get back to you.

When you get your new passport you should go into your local immigration office and register the change. It is free.

You are supposed to do this within 2 weeks of obtaining the new passport but they usually won't bother you if you don't (unless you are planning to take a vacation outside of the country).

They will transfer your multi-re-entry permit if you have one. This is also free.

Your visa (the paper in your passport) is meaningless. It is used (has an entry stamp on it and is past its expiry date). Your ARC (not your entry visa) covers your status and period of sojourn so there is no worry there.

thanks for all your input guys. Ginormousaurus, please do let us know the verdict. i do plan on traveling outside of the country. the main problem is, i can't send for my new passport in the month of december, as i'm leaving on holidays in a few weeks. upon return in january, i work the embassy's hours. i may be able to come into work late one day, but probably not another day to go to the immigration office. i'll be going on holiday again over the lunar new year. uggh, such a pain.

one more question ... does the embassy send you the new passport in the mail, or do you have to pick it up yourself? and also, i assume your passport number stays the same?

thanks loads!

I can still ask if you want. But I'd wager that ttompatz is probably correct. He seems to know a lot about these sorts of things.

Nope. You'll get a new number. That's one of the things I asked about.

The passport renewal time is pretty limited. 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or something like that. Costs well over a 100 without a guarantor and without a guarantor you'll need 4 references.

For those who work during the day, I suggest you get them to courier it back to you. It is no extra cost.
