Just got back a few days ago. Everytime, I visit I find something new to enjoy. The first time I was went in Christmas 2006 on holiday. Then March and May for training/certification (company paid!).
After the most recent course, I was able to catch Chicago's 40th Anniversary tour at the Hollywood Theater in the MGM Grand. A solid 90 + minutes show with the hits and quite a few extended jams.
I also gambled a bit but only lost about $150.
Can't wait to wrap up my certification later this year! |

While the shows, accommodations and attractions are top-notch; the over-all seedy, gaudy, over-the-top addictiveness is quite scary. Just look at the zombies in the casinos, drinking, gambling, like robots really. And to think that the casinos pay millions in psychological and human-behavior consulting to make the place even more addictive... Really is a sad testament to human behavior. |

I don't disagree but everyone has free will and can make an educated choice on whether to gamble or not.

I've been living in Las Vegas for a month each year the last few years. I like the city more now than I ever had before.
Everything is always being built.. so things are so new. A lot of people are moving there from all over the world. First time I went to Vegas was 1992.. and the demographics have changed significantly. Many dealers in the casinos are predominately asian women now!
I also love the fact that people REALLY dress up to the nines when they go out. Speaking particularly of the best casinos.
If you go downtown, you'll see the more hardcore and poor gamblers who are really only there to gamble.
If you walk around the Strip, you'll see mostly tourists as well.
Places like RIO, Palms, or Hard Rock, you have this really fashionably dressed and ready to party crowd. Love the airport as well, the energy is incredible. That sense of emotion people have when landing or even when leaving completely physically and emotionally drained on their lows and highs. Quite a city.
Personally, I'm not into gambling, although I do enjoy holdem poker tournaments. The best part of Las Vegas is just the energy and people-watching and the 24 hours of activity/energy going on all the time. |

What do you disagree with? Obviously there are those who visit Las Vegas specifically for the gambling-all other entertainment venues being secondary. These are the people I am talking about. The vast majority of these people, in my experience, are gambling addicts, junkies, always thinking they can beat the house and many not with the financial freedom to be risking their retirement and or their children's education on their addiction. The FACT that casinos spend millions annually on research and consultation to make games more addicting, the casino's colors more inviting, the drinks coming just at the opportune time as to keep the losing gamblers in their seats until every single dollar has been extracted, is akin to the tobacco companies researching to make cigarettes more addictive, more appealing, more deadly. A very sad, disgusting industry pandering to the lowest common denominator. Sickening. |

I lived in Vegas for 11 years from 1993-2004, and true, it changed very much. But, it doesn't change the fact that outside the strip, there's very little to do. It was a great day when I graduated college and got out. It's an ok town to visit, but a horrible town to live in. |

Was there for a couple of months a couple of years ago.
A great place if you have lots of cash.
An awful place if you don't.
Spent weeks looking for a nice apartment. Not much out there.
Vegas sucks, especially once you get off the strip. Some of the saddest strip malls I have seen - rundown supermarkets full of degenerates playing video poker.
Clubs are average. Food is average. People are ugly.
Forget finding reasonable priced public internet access. |

I thought the apartments were pretty good - always had balconies and very new - just built.
Agree about the degenerates playing video poker all over the city however - every gas station has more people playing video poker than people buying gas. |

I didn't like those low-rise condo developments, seemed to have dodgy characters hanging out on the balconies of all the ones I could afford.
Vegas isn't that bad though, I was a little harsh in my previous post.
Ginseng BBQ across the strip from the Monte Carlo has great Korean food! |

The little Chinatown in Spring Mountain is really building itself up nicely.
Earlier people mentioned that outside of the Strip, there is very little to do if you were living in Las Vegas. Probably true, but the same could be said for most American cities.
The thing that really sets Vegas apart however, is that the Strip is very international and has high energy everyday of the week. Seems like that alone would keep things fairly fresh (even if the tourism culture wears thin after awhile). |

I understand the job market is awesome out there. I have heard many stories of many different types of college graduates going to Vegas to get a good paying job.
They say Vegas has economic and job development due to the big monies flowing in everyday, while suburb communities are expanding out into the desert to provide new housing. I used to do mortgage telemarketing, called Vegas a lot, and found that most didn't speak English due to being recent immigrants. California was much like this too while Florida had mostly retirees and people with good jobs who mostly spoke English. Florida is said to be pretty good too for job hunters. |

I haven't been to Vegas since 2002, but plan on going next year. I'm sure even in 6 years the place has changed quite a bit.
Personally, I'm not much of a gambler. I spend more on shows and other entertainment.
To the OP, I saw Chicago in August for the second time in my life and they were pretty good. I remember seeing them 10 years ago and was disappointed with the show. Not sure why I felt differently, it was basically almost the same guys. |

I love Vegas for the shows, gambling, and golfing. I'm going next month in January to check out the CES. Also going to watch "O" and play a few rounds of golf. |

"O" was good. I also heard good things about Ka. I was thinking about heading out to sin-city one last time before leaving to SK. I'll be out in the boonies - it maybe a good idea to get it out of my system one last time |
