I know some will disagree, but i spoke directly with the supervisor of my education district on friday about the new regulations because myself and many other public school teachers will strongly re-think our decisions to resign...
She said to me "Don't worry about it. ABSOLUTELY no laws have been passed yet, and if they DO PASS it will mean big problems for a lot of people....just sit tight"
so i took this a as veiled way of saying "nothings gonna change"
i think this is all just a bunch of smoke and mirrors designed to scare people....everyone relax |

actually my korean handlers know nothing of these changes... i just don't believe all these changes will really stick when they realize all the foreign teachers are leaving... like other posters have written, korea is not the gem of asia, there are better places to teach over here, and while i do like korea, i'm not willing to jump through all these hoops |

And nothing has been written in stone on any official site as of yet.
I think the Koreans were trolling us |

I think these changes will apply, but on a case by case basis. I think immigration will use this as they see fit to weed out whomever they want. Probably bigger institutions will be given a pass, but mom and pop hogwans will either have to come up with the requirements for their teachers or else fork up the cash to some some official with deep pockets. Regardless, the official announcement has already resounded overseas and so will bring a chill to new recruits or those thinking of signing a new contract. Surely the medical check in country won't go away as I assume some clinics selected by the government stand to benefit financially by requiring foreigners to give blood and urine samples. Follow the money trail and see who benefits and who gets hurt by tailoring the policy to suit the needs of the moment. And don't expect this requirement to cause a let up in the negative media press foreign instructors already get in Korea. |

Public school recruiting is still going by the regular way of doing it. No apostille or consulate interviews. |

When I applied for my PS in June this year, I had to provide a criminal check and have a medical done. Everybody I know who has had an EPIK contract since has submitted these. It's in practice at the moment. |

Considering that public school hiring has
always included criminal record checks, health checks (most likely a drug test was in there) and just went through degree scrutinization.
I'm assuming nothing will change. |

when i applied for my PS position, all i needed then was:
a copy of my degree
sealed transcript
criminal check
medical check (piece of paper filled out by my doctor back home-- no drug tests were there) |

I hate to be negative, but I don't think things are going to go back to how they were before. Koreans have their panties in an uproar since that guy got arrested in Thailand. Yes, he had no record, but I don't think the Korean government cares about that.
As I said in another thread, I think the universities (at least the public ones) are going to start requiring the same stuff of EVERYONE regardless of visa status. I hope I'm wrong, but this is what I'm clearly hearing from my end. |
