Ohh, big burn! The Chinese are not happy with the Koreans right now.
Gee, might it have to do with
a) the massage sex students?
b) the abusive factory owners?
c) the ass-whoopin last month?
d) the presence of US forces in SK?
Anyway, I think that South Korea needs to 'Sparkle' a little more on China. Because they lost to Japan by 8 percentage points (assume a +- margin of error)

S.Korea is China's Least Favorite Neighbor - Survey
Chinese people like South Korea the least of all of their neighbors, according to the results of a survey released Monday. It is unusual for South Korea to rank ahead of Japan as China's most unpopular neighbor.
In the survey of 12,000 Chinese people over the past four months by the International Herald Leader, a newspaper published by China's official Xinhua News Agency, 40.1 percent of respondents said they dislike South Korea the most. Japan came in second place with 30.2 percent of the vote. The most-liked neighbor was Pakistan with 13.2 percent followed by Russia and Japan, the newspaper said.
In September, market researcher Millward Brown surveyed 1,000 Korean adults on their favorite neighboring country. The majority -- 60.8 percent -- said the U.S. China ranked second with 44.0 percent followed by Russia with 41.4 percent and Japan with 35.6 percent. |

Likely makes Japanese feel a little better huh?
What of Koreans who lack substantive integrity, project great ignorance, greed & arrogance? Any such "outsider", whoever they may be, is almost certainly to contribute to a negative impression on whatever indigenous population they may.
One more reason expats wherever they find themselves are best served by good behavior & manners.
Did this not have had an impact on the survey respondants sharing their impressions?
Question: How exactly does the US "neighbour" SK?
Most Americans have actually had to take long int'l flights to reach Asia |

You're gonna have screwy results when you're in a country that can classify both Pakistan and Japan as neighbors. |

Most of my kids can't find Asia on a map, even though they're aware they're in Asia. Many circle the Kamchatka peninsula thinking it's Korea. |

In theory, so are all the world's embassies, no?
To call the US, Canada, France, Britain or Australia etc "neighbours" is pretty damn weak. |

This is a little odd. The only actual, real live land neighbor SK has is NK and it isn't even on the list. And where is the option for: I hate all of them.
I am surprised SK is getting such negative reviews in China. What happened to the Korean Wave? Not to mention it was announced the other day that SK is the largest foreign investor in China. To beat out Japan by 10% points is quite an achievement when you consider a couple of years ago the Chinese gov't was sponsoring an anti-Japan wave. It would be nice to get a fuller account of the original article. |

I was almost run over by a US military truck today, twice.
I was tempted to flip the bird or cut them off or do anything to demonstrate my anger.
However I realized that such might be deemed an act against the US military, and not just road rage.
This event helped me to understand how America is perceived as being a neighbour. |

I could go with "neighbor" if you're talking a pacific rim nation, although the UK isn't a pacific rim nation. |

I have many mainland Chinese coworkers. None of them care about Korea beyond thinking the girls look like aliens. They HATE Japanese. My personal experience is 100% opposite of the OP. |

Maybe some Chinese are annoyed that the little pipsqueak country that used to be a vassal state is doing better than they are.
I hear there's a lot of Korean immigrants in China living in comparative luxury.
Damn immigrants. |

Someone told me the same thing the other day. Koreans take their won and go live in China where it is cheap and they don't have to work. If that is generally known, I doubt it goes down well with the Chinese public. |

I guess the polllsters didn't call any of your co-workers then. Or maybe they didn't call enough people in Nanking.
My assumption is (since I'm not in China) that the reasons for the high disapproval rates is due to more recent events. Like that incident with the Korean factory owners being held hostage by the Chinese workers due to terrible conditions. Yeah, that would not endear people... |

There must be at least .5 million Koreans in Beijing alone. Generally, Koreans are considered rude to Chinese.
The problem, I think, is that many Koreans (like every other foreign nationality) have problems with ignorant 'peasants' in China. But the Koreans generalize and take it out on the rest of the Chinese. I love Beijingers, but a lot of the lower classes are *morons*, if they're even honest. A key to enjoying Beijing is to adopt the Chinese attitude: class matters. When you're talking to an educated person, treat them with respect. When transacting with a peasant, let him know that you are not some amateur tourist to be ripped off. |
