|
|
I had my first phone interview for a job in Korea, and the woman doing the interview kept on calling me Jack and not Zach. Is this pretty common in Korea and should I expect on be calling Jack everywhere I go? I had a Korean Grade 10 Science Teacher (amazing teacher!!) who also called me Jack. Just got curious about the name/pronunciation bit. |

there's no 'Z' in korean pronunciation.. the closest approximation is 'J', hence jack.
i remember a story about someone being asked 'do you like jews? i really hate jews'.. after the shock wore off, he realised the guy was talking about places where you go to see lions and giraffes.. |

I had a friend named Zack in Korea. Not only would Koreans pronounce his name as Jack, but they would try to correct is spelling when he wrote his own name with a Z. |

I give on the fly pronunciation lessons all the time. "In English we say zzzzzzoo. Make this sound at the start: zzzzz. Zoo." Usually works. |

Heh -- yeah, that one's always funny.
The other day one of my kids ran up to me with animal stickers on her hand.
"Teacher! I have a jew!" |

(I was planning on posting this even before I saw your post.)
I was at a house party in Skanktaewon where there was not just one but TWO Zanes. Goddamn! They must be the only two Zanes in all of bloody Northeast Asia, and there they were, the both of them, drinking brews, smoking cigs, and yakking... on one dumb balcony in Skanktaewon. I knew almost nobody there, so I starting introducing myself Zane as well.

When I used to go to my "Free Korean" classes, the woman teacher in charge kept calling me "Lon"
Distinguishing "r's" from "l's" is a very common problem among Asians in general.
When I lived in Miami I knew many Brazilians who pronounced long e as short i, hence "beach" became b-i-t-c-h and "sheets" became s-h-i-t-s ... |

LOL . . . I had to do a double take on your "Skanktaewon" reference as I almost read it as "Saskatchewan." |

You guys are all crazy.
The Korean language can emulate all sounds perfectly! It is the perfect language. You are simply imagining these flaws. It is clearly just a mistake with your listening comprehension.
Do I actually have to throw in a , or do you all understand that I'm b.s-ing? |
