I planned to do that as well.
Then I saw this big spiritual hammer chipping away at my soul and I thought to myself do I want to die and come back as a used car salesman or do I want to keep my soul and come back as a TESOL trainer.
you can guess what I did.

i think someone at the board blocked youtube in my classrooms... i tried using the "merry christmas, mr. bean" episode in class today (after a short lesson on christmas vocab, christmas rhymes activity), and the kids liked it, hell even my co-teacher liked it!
we didn't finish the whole thing, but i used it for 20m.... that was the most peaceful 20m i've had all month. |

If you want to get away from your school for a couple of days you could take in a teacher training seminar. There will one for sure that I know is offered during the month of January. Schools are often willing to let native teachers attend training sessions during the down times when it is going to improve the teacher, which they see as a benefit to them.
Perhaps you could make plans to do something constructive that wows your school. Really, I am not kidding. My public school has given me lots of freedom to be creative during the break time, and it has been a tremendous boost to my overall position. The last three years I have been able to write four curriculum guides for my high school program that the school paid me to work on while I was at home putting together the manuscript. Most of the time schools have no idea of what to do with the foreign teacher because the teacher doesn't ask for options.
Maybe writing isn't your thing, but if you are creative and approach your school with ideas that will make everyone look better from the perspective of education, you will be surprised at the willingness of school admins to work with you. My school principal shows great respect to me simply because I work hard to make him and the school look better. He and other head people from the high school that employs me are often talking to Provincial officers and sharing lots of good news about what I am doing for them. It has provided me with lots of opportunities I would never have received if I had not taken the time to inquire about how I might be able to help the school in some way. |

If someone did that I would be really angry. I use Grammar rock to review grammar points. I use the roadrunner cartoons to review verb tenses.
In fact if no one told me and I planned a lesson that involved youtube.
I would cancel the lesson and blame the person who blocked the site. |

yeah, i was pretty surprised. right now i'm trying to find a program (a free one) that converts .flv to .avi (i can currently download stuff from youtube, but most of the classroom computers don't have the program to play .flv files). |

Our exams are late this year since they won't start until Friday the 14th.
I wish they were at this time every year rather than at the beginning of December.
This week, my grade 2 classes are cancelled for self-study. With the grade 1 students I'm doing Jeopardy review.
During exams I can stay home and do my work there.
After the exams I'll do Christmas and New Years cards.
Then, I should do something cultural but I haven't come up with a good idea yet.
I was thinking about showing "The grinch" (original) and having a bunch of
discussion questions to go along with it. Stopping the video at certain points to ask questions and giving candy canes for great answers.
A lot of teachers just show videos but that's pretty lazy. A friend of mine has already been showing videos for a week and a half and only plans to do that until the semester is up. He doesn't even make worksheets or anything. |
