| And why will these people be a deterrant to an invading army - 300 million Chinese for example? |
Please explain how 300 million Chinese are going to bypass our navy and air force to put people on the ground in the U.S. (or Canada or Mexico or anywhere in our "sphere" for that matter). |
No, I won't explain because I don't believe and am not advocating that they can or will. It was a hypothetical. Anyway, if, as you now seem to suggest, it'd be impossible for a 300 million-strong army (therefore any invading ememy whatsoever) to put people on the ground in the sphere of the US, why make this point (the thread)?

| My point is, anyone who gets through to the U.S. (from wherever), in whatever numbers, will be facing not only the regular U.S. army, but also a population of gun enthusiasts that includes everyone except babies. |
About a third of all households actually. Nominally, there are 9 guns for every 10 Americans. Sounds good. But there are many households that have dozens if not hundreds of guns and two-thirds of households with none at all. In any case, the major centers of population in the US are the areas where guns are more sparse, ja? The US is a largely urban population (80%) and - again - it isn't an armed civilian population standing in the way of the whole show coming to an end. There are other reasons.

My point is, we bombed the Vietcong back into the stone age and they're only just now pulling themselves out of there. It took the U.S., what, a few years, a decade or so, to get back in the saddle and defeat the commies? Russia just gave up, and China has become a de facto capitalist country. Win. |
Your point appears to be that the US won an ideological war against the spread of Communism. I suppose that's right. It did not, however, win the military conflict against the North Vietnamese, because, although the casualties were far greater on the North Vietnamese side, it was an incredibly difficult conflict and its outcome was the opposite of what the US went to war for. |

this thread has it all backwards anyway.
americans need their guns to protect themselves from their own government, not any outside force....geez, know your enemy. |

This is much how I see it. The US gave up and thereby lost a battle but won the war in the end. Much like the North losing First and Second Mannasses, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, and the Wilderness but won the war anyway. |

| Your point appears to be that the US will never be used, owned or pawned because of its plentiful supply of 200kg rednecks with guns. An optimistic position given the US military failed to win a jungle guerilla war against a country which spent less per annum on its military than Americans spent on ice cream. |
We've gone from 440 pound backwater armed rednecks to the fallout from Vietnam in only two pages.
Though to draw a parallel, it would be hard for any military force to invade the US. For one, there are too many well trained and well armed militias. Secondly, they know the land; we would have home field advantage.
In fact, you can say the same thing happened during the revolutionary war. The locals used the land to their advantage which is part of definition of 'guerrilla' warfare. |

Uh huh.
At this point, a furious Sharon reportedly turned toward Peres, saying "every time we do something you tell me Americans will do this and will do that. I want to tell you something very clear, don't worry about American pressure on Israel, we, the Jewish people control America, and the Americans know it." |
Yep! Thread over.

So because Sharon said something in a fit of temper, it must be true...
You're going to have to do better than this. |

That would demote and demean Blair even further, wouldn't it? |

I doubt he could be demoted, demeaned or embarrassed anymore than he already is. Even if they grafted a little poodle tail on him. "Middle East Peace Envoy!" Says it all, doesn't it? |
