Hi;
I am writing an article about the Forum and I was wondering who whould like to help me bu giving me their thoughts and impressions.
I have PMed all the Mods and a random selection of the 100 most frequent posters and asked a short list of questions.
From these questions and answers I hope to develop more specific questions and continue to investigate.
If you would like to be involved, please PM me and I will send you the letter that I sent to the other posters.
If you were not PMed, please do not get angry I chose them at random, literally rolling dice: 2D10s and then trying to get a broad selection of personalities.
Anyway, thanks for any help that you can give me.

We could debate the questions on the forum.. hash them out and see what we come up with.. kind of fun to bounce ideas off of each other..
Thats one of the more interesting aspects of the forum as well.. |

I am all for that Tiger Beer but that would kind of make an article moot.
As well, I would like to see what people have to say anonomously. If people discuss it on the Forum they might say something "popular" rather than "honest".
Anyway ... I wanted to explore the idea and concept of community with regards to an online forum such as:
What is an online community?
What is needed for a community?
Are there community leaders?
Is the forum like a town hall?
What role does moderation have on the community?
ect.
That is the general theme or topic which I am looking for.
Still if people want to discuss it, go right ahead. |

I have another general question about the Forum, Korea, and other websites or publications:
Q: Have you ever read an article about the ESL industry or life in Korea as a ESL instructor that you felt was written by someone who did not actually teach here? For example an article that was so outragously inaccurate or exagerated that it did not accurately reflect your experience or the experiences of anyone you have ever met here?
For example: I read some where that some claimed that Nachos were $100 an order in restaruants or something simular.

In addition I would really like to hear about the experiences and opinions of people who live or have lived in small and/or isolated parts of Korea.
My first experiences with D's ESL Cafe were when I was all alone .....
BTW: I am focusing only on the "NEW" board because of statistics and user totals.
FUN FACT:
As of time of posting there are 1431 posters who have made at least one post but there are 3606 registered users.
Why? Weird .......

I did a long long time ago.. my first time here was 1996-1997 for a year.. and before I came over I was reading about 'teaching in Asia'.. which later when I re-read I realized it didn't apply whatsoever to Korea.. it was very on target with Japan however. |

Many registrations aren't approved because they don't notice the "e-mail Dave" requirement listed on the automatic reply. And even without that, most registration-based message boards have similar statistics. Even Beckerson's, Pusanweb, and Big Bill's.
Here's another statistic - about 200 different posters could be called frequent posters, meaning more than 100 posts to their name. |

Is there anyway to estimate the total number of readers, you know people who don't post only read?
I remember there was a website statistics page, but, I think that was the old board. I don't want to bother Mr. Sperling with statistics questions, but, I have emailed him and told him what I am up to.

Not that I know of... and I'm not sure who you'd count. People surfing in, thinking about teaching in Korea, read some forums, (get scared off  ), and never return? The "guest" number is always higher than the registered user one, so a lot of people lurk (or don't bother logging in). Or, how about people like me who access the site from different locations? Seems hard to gauge technically...
My totally uneducated guess would be maybe 5000~10000 people in the last year. That's also in the neighbourgood of an estimate of legal E2 teachers that I've heard bounced about.. Of course, many people who teach here want nothing to do with this board. I hear the "whiner" criticism a lot. |

Nachos can be $100 in a Korean night club. Hasn't anyone been to one of those place where you pay $500 for whiskey and fruit? Don't we still have those places; I have not been for a few years.....maybe I hung out with too many rich Koreans....  |

The point was not about $100 nachos in a night club but the impression that nachos are $100 everywhere. For that matter, that point was wildly inaccurate or misleading information about teaching EFL in Korea. |
