interesting article to read

| Koreans like sex. In fact they love it. Consensual, under age, extra marital, kinky; you name it, they do it. But most of all Koreans like paid for sex. Korean men that is. They live for it. They spend millions on it every month. They have countless ways of getting their rocks off for cash. Juicy bars. Barber shops. Turkish baths. Room salons. Hostess bars. Strip clubs. Massage parlours. Brothels. About 358,000 men buy sex each day. That뭩 a lot of money. And a hell of a lot of sex |

The author is a moron. Every single piece of his (they pop up in various 2-nd tier mags and websites) that I've read has been filled with errors that show a blatant disregard for research, which is unfortunate because some of the topics he chooses could be interesting..
Just the short paragraph you quoted contains numerous errors:
"juicy bars" - no regular Korean male would know what this means as they only exist in Itaewon and clubs in the vicinity of US military bases.
"turkish baths" - the term disappeared years ago. These types of establishments are now usually called "sports massage" or have fallen under the regular category of "anma."
"hostess bar" - it's either a room salon (upscale) or a business club (not as luxurious but same concept)
"strip clubs" - there are no western strip clubs in Korea, unless one counts a pair of Russkies dancing in Vegas costumes or the odd once-a-night tittyy show in Korean nightclubs.
It may be potatoe-potato, but nevertheless mistakes.
I won't even go into the obvious lack of professionalism in his writing. The guy just sounds like a jealous little man without the means to enjoy the finer aspects of whorrre mongering (hence posing as a champion of oppressed women), and is forced to drown his sorrows away at Debut Bar. Maybe Polly will do him...
On the other hand...take a look at the models on that site. Yumms.

| Yeah, that's pretty interesting. Did you notice the article explaining what it meant by controling the supply side of prostitution? I don't completely understand that. Did the author mean the Korean government and other agencies with power or control should do more to prevent exploitation of women that work as pros? It said a little bit about the underage, forced girls and Philipinas who are taken advantage of. But she also implied that a lot of workers are pushed into it by economic factors. So maybe she is advocating a focus on the factors that contribute more to women's poverty? Nice article. |

Seoutrader,
-I have seen Korean men entering and leaving Juicy bars on the Hill.
-Hostess bars: If you had read the piece properly you would have seen I was referring to the hostess bars in Itaewon (Casablanca, Bellagio etc..)
No, I am not jealous of you, although I do admire your ability to make the best of a bad situation. You are prepared to spend your money (and your companys money) on prostitutes. Good for you. I prefer to meet women who actually want to have sex with me. Different strokes I suppose.
I am not going to criticize you for paying someone to open their legs for you, but calling me jealous because I don't have the means to spend a couple of million won on a glorified wank is a bit rich.... |

Puhahahah...you're CP? Too cool.
1. Korean men in Itaewon juice bars - of course there'll also be Koreans in Itaewon. I said "regular" Koreans do not know about the concept of "juicy bars."
2. Casablanca & Bellagio are juice bars as well, just a little nicer atmosphere and higher prices to 'keep the ESL/GI rabble out.' Pay them enough and they'll blow you just as well as the chix on the hill.
Sorry for the 'jealousy' quip, but you sometimes really do come off this way. Try inserting a little less personal opinion in your writing and maybe upgrade research methods a bit.
PS>I can bang a chick for free and have just as much fun, but I'm not looking for a relationship. In this case, paid fun is just a better deal all around. No BS date small talk (some of the coolest conversations I have are with hooks), no one to mislead to get ass, and even financially it really balances out (as you so cleverly mentioned, half of the time milking the ole corporate expense account).

Saharzie,
Sorry I assumed you were a woman. I liked your article. How do you think "supply" can be tinkered with to help the overall situation? |

| The impression i got was that if the government worked at providing women with working conditions and salaries that were equal to men's then the women wouldn't be forced to become prostitutes in order to make a living. |

I have been in Debut bar many times, and have yet to see any of them sitting on a couch. Come to think of it... I don't think there is a couch in there, is there?
I'm not sure I believe they were all former juicy-girls, either. I'll have to ask next time I'm in there. |

I have a korean friend who freely admits to occasional visits to satisfy his masculine urges. He says that the Korean girls who work there are usually people who have run up large credit card debts and have no other way to pay them off. I don't know how much I trust his appraisal, but he would seem to know more about it than I.

Yeh, it seems to be about economics. It is a lot harder for female graduates here to get work than male graduates. Also, the pay scales are unequal.
Take two countries, Ireland and Korea. Now, I know that Korean men are not more genetically predisposed to prostitutes than Irish men, but there is a lot more prostitution here than in Ireland. The demand is the same, I would imagine anywhere in the world, the fact is that the supply here far outstrips the supply in Ireland, and many other countries I have been in.
If the police and authorities made a real effort, they could stem some of the supply side, also there would have to be changes in the role of women in the economy. Some of it is cultural, there is just not the stigma here that there is in other countries.
Seoutrader,
I do not begrudge you your right to partake in the trade. I am not looking for a relationship either, but I would much rather got to a bar/club and pick up a one night stand there. It might not be quicker but it is cheaper, although, if I had half your expense account, I might change my tune:)
As for the juicy bars, are there not these bars scattered everywhere? In Bucheon there were loads of them, pretty low end places, with older women and clientele, mostly have wooden, boarded up looks to them.
I have dated a few of the hostess girls I met in reguar bars and have been to some to see them. All I saw were drunk business men acting like tools and forking over a lot of cash for nothing in return. In a juicy bar if you walk in you are guaranteed a release of some sort, not the case in a hostess bar.
points taken about writing style/research..,, I am continuisly trying to improve the ole writing so feedbcak appreciated... |

Conor,
Great work. You certainly have talent. Especially what you did for worknplay.com. Now if I can only find someone like you to help me develop similar regional content for my Daegu site in production. Please recommend, if you know of anyone down here that knows their way around a pen, like you do. |

Prostitution was in korea LONG before America was a country! Blame the U.S.! Hell, the world does. Red light districts have been around for thousands of years, just known as something different. Past rulers and kings in korea kept prostitutes in their "areas." Juice bars? Every city has them! Same with room salons, barber shops, massage places, etc. They have been in korea for a long time. Coffee shops also! Go to one of the coffee shops "downstairs" and get what you want! Very few non koreans visit these places when compared to the amount of koreans who do! Yes, non koreans visit but more koreans do. Take a drive throughout korea, drive through a SMALL town, couple thousand people or so and you'll always find the basement barber shop. Go to a town that has no foreigners and you'll see the same. The OP's story is correct. If you don't believe it, that's your problem or you're naive and a korean lover wanting to stand up for them. But the fact remains, koreans try and deny the "bad" but it's all over and has been. Business meetings are often conducted at these places. It's common knowledge!

| Nothing personal Saharzie, but I thought it was crap. It was a collection of loose facts followed by personal opinion that didn't match the facts mentioned, then put together into a poor, trashy presentation. |

Negative. Juicy bars (I've always prefered the term petting zoos) are spread around Seoul in small pockets, although they aren't called juicy bars. Check the area between Kongduk and Dae Heung station, for example. Regular Koreans pass by them all the time so I think regular Koreans do know what they are, just don't know the term "juicy bar." |
