So, my school is finally getting around to getting my health insurance (4 months in). Anyways, my boss told me that there are 2 different kinds. She said both are under NHIC and both are split 50/50 by me and her.
One of them is workers insurance which she told me is approx 7% of my wage that I would have to pay every month. This seems a bit high to me. I thought it was only suppose to be about 3.5%? Is she trying to pull the wool over my eyes and get me to pay the full 100%?
The other one she called resident insurance. She said it will cost me $54 a month but I have to pay 3 months lump sum, and I have to go and pay it in person. She was really trying to push this one on me.
I dont really know what to think. I thought there was only 1 type of insurance and I thought it was about 3.5% of my wage. I know she is having some money issues as well so I just want to make sure that I'm not getting worked over.
Thanks alot for all your input. |

The resident insurance is for self-employed residents. My understanding is that, as of a number of years back, if you are not considered self-employed, then you must have the standard insurance plan. I believe the coverage is the same either way, and some E-2s do end up using the self-employed insurance; but if you're getting a monthly salary and are full-time, I'm pretty sure you're supposed to just get the normal plan. And the 7% is not what you pay....I'm not sure what the actual % is though.
Anyone else? |

| I have never paid more than about 1.5% of my wage for health insurance. |

I really don't have the answer. Ttompatz is the man you should talk to.
But, I think the 7% is the total amount. If you split it with your employer than you should only have to pay 3.5%
While he maybe trying to pull the wool over your eyes, it maybe just a communication error. I would try to be diplomatic even though he was extremely in the wrong to have not paid you for the first three months. Basically, he was not in compliance with the law.
You will probably also have to back pay for the months he was not in compliance.
Furthermore, I would recommend not taking self-insurance if that is what it is. As his employee, he has to enroll you in the national health plan and he should pay at least half. If he doesn't accept this, you may need to talk to the labor board about it.
And, don't let him say something about the contract. If he has sponsored you for an E-2 visa, he is responsible for you, period. He must ensure your health by enrolling you in the national insurance program.
Good luck and try to be diplomatic even if he is in the wrong.
Just my two bits for whatever it is worth. |
