I have the 16 gb touch. I love it. The interface is the best there is in any player, video plays quite nicely, sound quality is good, the photos feature is great and using the safari browser is the best mobile internet experience I have ever had. I is also tiny, you will not even notice it in your pocket. It is pricey for what you get as far as capacity though.
The Archos players are also very nice, better for watching video- Bigger screen. there is also the potential for PVR with it if you buy the PVR dock. There is a touch screen but it is lame compared to the ipod touch and the mobile browser is a joke compared to the ipod's browser. The sound quality was similar to the ipod but the price per gb was much better than the ipod. It is much larger as well, fairly bulky/less portable.
If you want a good media player with the best interface, internet browser and form factor go for the touch. If you want a high capacity media player with the very best video viewing and decent but inferior interface/browser and size doesnt matter to you, go for the archos. |

The larger form factor PMPs were just that, too large. The Touch fits in a pants pocket and therefore goes everywhere I go. I can envision a lot of scenarios where I wouldn't want to have the bulk of an Archos.
But, it's a tradeoff, obviously, as the Archos has a lot more screen and capacity, but that just wasn't worth it to me. The screen on the Touch is just large enough and the capacity isn't a big deal since I swap out media on a daily basis. |

cnet did a comparison of the two a couple or few weeks ago. Go and see if you can find it. The archos won. The comparison might help you decide. |

I've had the plastic cover film on mine since i bought it, and even that doesn't get very dirty. A simple wipe with my shirt is often enough.
I love it, and have no complaints. |

I went with the Touch because of
1. iTunes. I'm in bed with iTunes forever--spent a ton of time customizing my library on there, and I'm not about to change.
2. Size. I need something small enough to fit in a dress shirt pocket. If I wanted something the size of the Archos, I'd just get an eee PC.

Size matters. A few extra centimeters and grams can be the difference between not noticing something or carrying a brick. |

Yeah, that's something i thought, too. About the size. That Archos thing is a little too heavy for my liking. |

It's amazing how finicky we get now. 3 years ago the Archos would have been pick of the crop, regardless of size. Now people want something that packs a bundle but is smaller than a deck of cards.
A 160gb Archos would be the shizzle. I'd be comfortable with the extra size for a capacity 10 times larger than the ipod.
Imagine how handy that would be when traveling. Stick 10-15 movies on it, plus all your music. Store photos on it too. The proprietary usb plug is a pain, but the rest is perfect.
Ipods are way overrated. Proprietary up the a$$. |

All depends what your needs are. I don't need or want to keep 15 movies on my ipod. 16gigs is more than enough space.
The ipod gives me all the hardware i need, in a convenient package, with a great interface. |

There's the rub, eh? Sure, the Archos would rock the hizzouse when you're on a plane ride, but what about when you're just out on the town? Too bulky by far to carry around casually.
As far as proprietary...The Touch still plays mp3s no problemo. Yes, video has to be converted, and that is one of the tradeoffs you'll have to make, but I haven't found it to be a significant problem. |

I'd rather carry around a bulkier device with more capicity.
IF you want a player for jogging or gym then go shiny slim apple. If you want a player for bus, subway, weekend trips, flights etc then get a fully fledged PMP. |
