|
|
So I'm about to get a new system on Monday and will be reinstalling the old system with minimum apps to use as a back up computer/kids computer
Anyhow on the new computer I have a number of programs that I consider necessary for school prep and hobbies. I'll list them below, but would like suggestions for others...
AVG Free
Notepad++
speedfan (heat monitor)
MS Office - word, excel, publisher, powerpoint
Adobe photoshop
Adobe premiere
ACDsee
Daemon Tools
Gom PLayer
codec pack (looking for something less bloated than I currently use)
Nero Burning Rom
WinRar
filezilla
firefox
putty
CCcleaner
Adaware
audacity
VLC player
other suggestions? |

Which OS will you use?
With Vista, you only really need a light anti-virus. Vista is very good at blocking spyware and viruses.
After using Vista for 9 months, I'm realizing that less is more. Don't bother with utilities and anti-spyware. Vista has been utilized to do without those things. Just install the OS then barebones programs.
I'm using the very light and free AVG. No problems in 9 months.
Every couple of weeks run diskcleaner. Vista stores an incredible amount of useless files. Wipe them. |

Comodo Firewall
Comodo - other products they have a nice malware proggy now
Spywareblaster to plug the holes
If you are planning on going the Linux route I would recommend SuSE 10.3 it's a very polished distro and has given me no problems.
I know you will be tempted by ubuntu, Mint etc but I've tried them all and the only one which worked out of the box, detected everything and did it's job was SuSE
Also for fun if you have an SSE3 processor you could always try running OSX86 just for fun (or even seriously as at least one board member does) |

Linux is an app? It makes more sense if one thinks of it that way. |

Here's a list for OSX.
Open Office/Neo office- open source office suite, better than MS office IMHO.
MacFuse for Macs. Implements a mechanism that makes it possible to implement a fully functional file system in a user-space program on Mac OS X (10.4 and above).
Handbrake for Mac. Converts and rips media formats in to multiple formats.
Flip 4 Mac. Plays WMV files seamlessly in Quicktime.
AdiumX. Multiple client Chat app.
DejaVu: For automated backups.
VLC player: The best media player.
Firefox: The best browser. |
