The 1980s icon makes his return as an aging, bald man

Great. Yet another reminder that Im getting old.

Word is that 1980s icon Max Headroom is returning to TV in a series of ads for the U.K.s Channel 4.

Which is all well and good I treated my officemates to an enthusiastic c-c-c-c-catch the wave! impression until I realized two things.

One, all the 25-year-olds were looking at me with a confused stare. And two, the station will bring back the former Coke spokesman as an aging, bald man. Thanks, guys.

Channel 4s three-week campaign, starting this Saturday, aims to raise awareness of the mandatory U.K. switchover from analogue to digital TV. The change is scheduled to begin in 2008.

The six commercials will feature Matt Frewer, who portrayed the original Max Headroom. Basically, Max will criticize his Channel 4 creators for ignoring his vision of a digital future with the tagline Get set for digital. Stunning creativity, I know.

The ads range from five seconds to more than a minute in length, and will be developed in conjunction with Channel 4s website providing information about the switchover.

Max Headroom embodied a fictional artificial intelligence, and dazzled viewers with his surreal wit, electronically sampled voice and endearing stutter.

Created in 1985 by George Stone, Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton he was more than just a soda pop spokesperson: he was also featured in music video show The Max Talking Headroom Show, the TV movie 20 Minutes into the Future, and American TV series Max Headroom.

On a related note, I suddenly have a craving for some cool, refreshing Coke.

Laughing In high school I was a finalist in a talent contest put on by my town's big shopping mall for my Max Headroom impersonation, getting to do the moves on local television in suit and slicked back hair and sunglasses. I reprised the role for a hundred fifty bucks in a fur and leather store commercial which ran during the Superbowl (local feed cut-in, not national feed).

Gawd I hope all that video has been destroyed. Embarassed That was another world.
