It's worth remembering that The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is spending tens of billions of dollars to promote health and education around the world. Yes, he's filthy rich and has many more billions but he is actually doing it. The foundation paid out 1.56 billion in 2006 alone. A lot of other rich men do next to nothing.

$1.65 billion is peanuts in a world where 1.65 billion people live on $1 day. He just gave them pay raise of 0.002739726027397260273972602739726%
God or Jesus said to do good works in private. You have to do the work anonymously or its just making a purchase. |
If everyone thinks as narrow as you do, there will be no money to pay for public goods, ever. |

Ah, charity. The salvation of the rich and evil. If only I had enough money to buy a clean conscious. |

Is he expected to save every unfortunate in the world?!!
How could a famous person like Gates give so much money away privately???!!
Think about it! |
Oh theres ways to do that. Plenty.
Rule #1 - Shut your mouth
#2 - Hire a good lawyer to donate the money clandestinely to foundations that exist already or make another foundation clandestinely.
#3 Say nothing or as little as possible and then he can remove himself from the organization.
#4 Engage in sweat equity like make jobs for Africans or teach at a school.
Its about humility.
I had a discussion with someone along time ago when the foundation was first set up and Gates wanted to vaccinate children to save lives. Sounds good but thats actually pretty easy. Those kids will grow up to be desperation wracked slum dwellers. He can work on that problem. Thats far more complicated than any kernel routine he's ever made. |

So charity by the rich is a bad thing? Would you prefer the rich didn't do charity?
We live in this world of injustice. Some people have all the wealth and most don't have any. That's just the way it is. To say that the rich buy a good nights sleep by doing charity might be true......but isn't that better than them doing nothing?
Really guys! To slag a rich guy for doing charity is illogical. If you realise the way the world is in 2007 then credit any rich guy for spending a huge part of his fortune on the poor.
I can live with Bill Gates feeling better about himself knowing that he's helping tens of thousands of poor around the world.
Why don't you ask those poor what they think about his help? Would they rather refuse it because he's a fatcat businessman? |

Bill Gates gives to charity because he's rich, not because he's good. It's public relations, not goodwill. If he was a good person, he's give everyone in the world a computer that runs way better than these POS Microsoft machines run with, that runs faster, is lighter, and doesn't need all these cords. His donations to charity don't make him a better person, just a rich person with a bit less money. |

I retract this - he and his family will have legitimate security problems.
I went to a religious affiliated graduate school and we all had to take a Bible class. The Lord put out some pretty specific guidelines on how to do charity and we heard about it in class.
Here...
| Quote: |
| Matthew 6:1-18 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. ... |

Can't you see in cases like this how these starving Africans are used by rich foreigners? Not saying there is no starvation in Africa, just that Bill Gates donating to a charity like that is a photo op, not actually changing the world.
Would you say Lee Hyori's efforts in Africa are any less noble? Here's a post on the Metropolitician about just that. Is this charity or just posing?

I'm more concerned about helping those in terrible need. Not the rich getting photo op's. Really, it's better to suffer the sight of the rich portraying themselves as super people than see the poor suffer.
When you're desperate, it doesn't matter about the motivations of the helper. It's the help that counts.
I don't actually see Bill Gates blow his own trumpet about this. Yes, it's a public foundation. But what else could it be? You can't donate billions of dollars on the quiet. |

Sorry, I wasn't a billionaire when I was a teenager. I was a lowly computer nerd who realised that Bill Gates was evil. |

Fight the power nothing.
Charity has always acted as the "get out of jail free" card for every scallywag* you can think of.
Yes, doing it for questionable reasons is better than doing nothing. But it's not a ticket to sainthood despite the belief of the rubes. Simple fact is that Gates... not to mention many other members of society's elite.... has done a lot of douchebag things on his way to the top, and that should never be overlooked because he threw money at poor people.
*Yes, I used "Scallywag". So you know I'm not fooling. |
