Am planning to go on holiday for 2 weeks in February. I want to go somewhere with nice weather, beaches, food and fairly cheap. Maybe with my girlfriend. Which of these 3 places do people like and why?

I'm not interested in hearing about how cheap hookers are by the way...

You'll get recommendations for all 3. They all have nice beaches, good food and can be as cheap or as expensive as you want to go.

A good midrange budget is 50k won per day and that will put you in a nice resort on a good beach with fun activites as well as sightseeing and nightlife.

Add 250k won if you plan to get a diving certification.

Double the budget if you plan to do island hopping and lots of diving.

You can easily accomodate a couple for a 2 week vacation to remember and no worries on 1 million won + airfare.

You can do it on 1/2 that but you will be penny pinching when you shouldn't have to.

Hi ttompatz, can you recommend a place for getting diving certification in the Philippines?

Alona beach, Panglao island has 3 dive shops that are very good for certification or just daily diving. I like the shop at the Alona tropical resort, the one next to Oops bar and the one at the Bohol Tropics resort in Tagbilarn (Bohol).

Cost is about $250 for your certification and the resorts are clean, affordable and comfortable. They offer a good variety of dives as well.

I have NEVER had anyone come back with bad things to say about any of these three.

Boracay is also decent for your cert. Good shops, great diving and other things to do in your off time. Just remember, don't drink and dive. I liked the dive shop next to Nigi-nigi and the one just down from Alices but there are lots of decent ones along the beach.

There are some OK dive shops in/around Cebu city / Mactan Island / Lapu-Lapu city but they tend to be a bit more expensive and the boat trip to the dive sites is longer.

One to AVOID is the Korean dive shop at the Charlotte resort on Alona. They will certify you but you won't learn anything and they are NOT very good on the safety issues. They also completely skip the theory and just focus on getting you geared up and into the water as fast as possible.

Cheers for that ttompatz. Is it necessary to be a great swimmer?

It's not like in the old days when we had to swim a mile on the surface and 100 yards under water breath holding as part of our testing... (in the days before PADI).

Basic swimming skills are fine for your average scuba diver. If you can swim 100 meters you should be fine. You don't need to swim to dive but you may need to swim after you surface if the boat is not right next to you.

Agreed!! lol or if there is a STRONG current or you dive from the beach.

I have had to pull many of a "new" diver back to shore or a boat. lol

Anyway, Thailand has my vote! I love the food, wheather...........oh, and my girl is from there Cool
