With the new regulations taking effect for ESL teachers, there is no doubt that many will be swayed away from coming to Korea. With this in mind, is there a chance that monthly salaries will increase due to lack of labor? Given the norm is about 2 million won, I am curious about the near future.

Quality vs. quantity, if true, make yourself valuable.

This is the best time to teach EFL in Korea. It will never be this good again, in Korea.

I'd guess, if all the hassle of home country interview and other stuff flies, the shortage will kill some hagwons, and many schools will offer more $ and try to make jobs here at least sound more appealing. I think 2.5 should become average. Maybe wishful thinking though.

My answer is no - salaries will not increase. There's only so much most Koreans will pay for an English lesson and they're pretty much paying that now. In this case it's not scarcity that governs the market but rather the value of the service in the first place and regardless of the hype - English has a limited value. It will either price itself off the market and just become scarce or they'll figure out a way of bringing more English teachers in again.

Please prove me wrong.

Hagwons that will be willing to offer 2.5 million without taking away the airfare and paid rent will be few and far between.

The industry will be unigwons and public schools.
