I've decided to venture to Korea teaching and I just do not know where to go. I want to live somewhere not too big yet not too small with a vibrant, laid back atmosphere and a lot of things to do and places to see. I used to live in Kyoto and loved it as it met all of the above.
I have done a lot of research but have just ended up confused and indecisive.
If you think you know somewhere that fits the bill and have lived there then I'd be grateful if you could give me some information.
Thanks |

Jeju, but it might be too small.
Changwon, but it might not be vibrant enough.
Haeundae, Busan but it might not be small enough.
Hard to live up to Kyoto. |

You might like Busan if you're looking for something diverse, but that's a big city on the coast. I don't think you can find anything vibrant or fun unless you're in a fairly large city, but that's just my opinion. If you don't care about nightlife, then Gyeongju is a good place to check out. |

Busan has more vibe than Seoul. I agree. If you want laid back, try working in Jeju Island. |

Daegu is ok but Busan is a lot more fun. |

I'm surprised more people haven't said Seoul. There are lots of cities that are nice. I've lived in Daegu, Seoul, Jinju, Incheon and now Gwangju.
I personally don't think Seoul is that great of a place to live. However, everytime someone starts a thread it seems like people scream the loudest about living in Seoul.
I would recommend one of the larger cities to start with though:
Daegu
Busan (never lived there, but it seems nice)
Gwangju |

Well, one person's idea of a good city is another person's idea of a bad city. There are those people who prefer something more rural and potentially more Korean. When I first came to Korea, I lived in an apartment block in Umsa-Ri, which was small town and a half. You're able to experience the Korean spirit that way, and you're more appreciated, especially if you get a reputation as a hard worker at your job. After 6 months, I found myself gravitating to the big city in the neighborhood, which was Daejeon. Lived in Seoul for three years, Ulsan for two. Now I live in Pohang, a much-derided city but my little slice of it is homey. I'd consider Seoul, but I got things keeping me in Pohang, of all places. I understand why people would want to pick a city, but it may be an even more interesting experience if the city picks you. |

I choose Western Seoul. It''s not as expensive as Eastern Seoul and not trashy like Northern Seoul.
My neighborhood is quiet and not far from the busy party areas. |

Your first mistake is wanting to come to korea at ths time. Start looking at Japan or China. You will be better off later. |

I can't think of anywhere in Korea comparable to Kyoto. I think you might end up being disappointed. |
