So is that 540k with the stand?

What will it be like for watching movies or playing games?

Squirrel, I'm not crazy about that low resolution (1360x768) for computing/websurfing or movies. I'm not a gamer so I don't know how it would fare in that department. For 539,000 won they include the CASE (you can buy a stand or mount you want separately in Yongsan). But it's all academic, as you should go for something with better resolution than that one. My little laptop has sharper rez.

^^Good, will be waiting...sounds an interesting solution for getting a big screen w/out the BIG price. It would be cool to mount it on your wall. Also, if you can post some pics of yours I bet a lot of folks would like to see... Very Happy

It's still a BIG price when compared to a single 22" monitor, but competitive when compared to a dual-(big)monitor setup. And if one is planning to have it double as their home entertainment display, you've really got to go with the 30~37" range. No self-respecting white man I know watches movies on a little 22" or 24" screen. As for pics, those will have to wait as I'm fresh out of good, working-condition cameras. (The embarrassing reason why is to be the subject of an upcoming thread of mine in Off-Topic.)

JongnoGuru - how much did it cost then? Any photos and what did you get a frame?

It cost me about 600k including eats & drinks, no can do photos right now, and yes I got a simple black frame.

My IT guy sent me an email (and I translate):
Quote:
An "open frame" monitor is composed of panel, A/D board, and power supply (smps).

Complete LCD monitors have additional framing, pretty little buttons, and clever stands which serve to make it look neater and open your wallet a lot wider.

Usually, panels are distributed to display manufacturers from the LCD panel factory, but some of them always "leak out" from the factory or are acquired by small-brand companies (not stolen, of course, heaven forbid!).

Some power-buyers place sufficiently large orders to these factories to bend the rules and receive these panels. Vendors then assemble the A/D boards, power supplies and panels for people looking for cheap monitors.

Vendors sometimes offer stands and wall mounts, but usually do not. Stands are sold all over Yongsan, not a worry. There are also metal/plastic cases if you want to cover up the ugly metal frame, but I prefer using it without any frame as they are visually stylish to me with the innards hanging out.

Since they are the very latest LG-Philips/Samsung panels (also used in the highest-end full-package monitors) there are basically no problems or issues with performance, dead pixels, etc. At least no more than you'd have with full-package monitors.

They are great for movies/games/work. However I felt a bit dizzy when playing FPS games on my 37" since the screen is very big. I should be viewing the screen from a longer distance to resolve this. Remember, for all displays, the proper distance is 1.5x the diagonal.

A/S policlies vary among these open-frame vendors. Usually 1 week coverage of initial defects, so look quick and return quick if necessary. Some of these guys even disappear after a couple of months. But if there is a problem, don't worry -- there are many places in Yongsan that fix monitors. The panels are not likely to cause problems. It is usually the A/D board or back light or inverter. You can negotiate & pay more for a better A/D board in the original purchase.

Bought it, played with it a week or so, unloaded it, bought a smaller one.

The 37" behemoth is no more. Well, it's no more on my desktop. It's just too large for normal computer use. It might be okay if my desk was as deep as it is wide Confused , or if I had 1m-long arms. Stupid-kid-fun at the beginning, but man... firing up that monster just to check email or read the news? 22" ~ 24" does all I need.

Still, there are uses, needs and desk arrangements where a big-ass monitor would be handy, and open-frame IS very price-competitive. If anyone's interested, I found quite a few shops that specialse in open-frame (selling panels, stands, assembling to order) along the street-level at Sun-in Plaza (yongsan's infamous "that white building"). Their shops open onto the long alley that runs parallel to the main street coming from Shinyongsan. Also lots of shops around there hawking that mad-scientist-looking printer-ink-supply contraption that SuperHero got.
