My friend and I are planning on coming to teach in February and are currently trying to pick a location. She prefers a coastal city and we both want to be near Seoul. I know Incheon is closest to the coast, but I've personally heard more about Suwon.
What are the cities like? Pros/cons?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated! |

Incheon's a pretty big city, what part of it are you going to be in? That could make a big difference. |

I agree with Wayne....it really depends where you are in Incheon. It looks like Wayne is closer to Bupyeong, which isn't bad because you can hop on the Line 1 express train and get into Seoul pretty quickly. I lived a little bit further out toward Juan Station (by express train it would take me an extra 30 mins including getting to the station from where I lived).
Also pollution is better in some parts of town then others. There are some areas that are quite industrial. Try to stay away from those.
If you can find something near Bupyeong that would be great. |

Incheon is on the coast, but it is very rare that you will ever see the
ocean. It is surrounded by barbed wire and watch towers. Also the
port is huge, messy and off-limits.
As for being close to Seoul, you are, but it sucks at night. Basically
there are NO ethnic restaurants or rockin' bars in Incheon. (even though
it has over 3 million people) Incheon is a cultural black hole. Therefore
trips into Seoul are mandatory for a good time. Unfortunately the subway
stops at around 10-10:30 PM, so you have to leave the bar at 9:30PM.
That is when things are just picking up. IT SUCKS!
I don't know much about Suwon, but I would highly recommend
ditching both Screwon and Grinchon for Seoul instead |

It depends, if she likes kimchee (cabbage) style go to Suwon. However, if she prefer kimchee (radish) style I'd say Incheon.
I hope that makes sense. |

Regarding ethnic restaurants, I can immediately think of two Philippine restaurants, two Italian restaurants, two Japanese restaurants, a Russian restaurant, all within a small area of Incheon. If I tried harder, I could come up with a longer list.
There are also imported food supermarkets that have good things from Thailand, Philippines etc.
They are good restaurants and the prices are half of what you'd pay for similar quality in Seoul.

Can you elaborate on these restaurant comments? I've lived in this dung
heap for 10 years and I have never seen them. Although I gave up
looking years ago. |

You think Incheon has no ethnic restaurants?? Come to Gimpo. The closest thing to Ethnic restaurants is a Sorento's and a VIPS. The VIPS didn't even open til last week. |

Yes, one restaurant area is Dongincheon. Philippine, Russian, Italian, Japanese, Chinese restaurants there.
Also there is Ju-an, theres a Thai restaurant there in addition to a fine Italian restaurant.
Gu-wol Dong is another ethnic restaurant area.
Yunnan Pier area is another area.
Jemulpo is yet another area. There's more.
Of course there's China Town.
If you like seafood there's a multitude of seafood restaurants in various places. |
