However, there's a fair bit of references by Paul supporters that seem, for lack of a better term, racist. Nothing out and out, I hate non-whities, but a lot of intimating to that effect. I haven't found anything Paul himself has said that was straight out racist, but I've only spent an hour reading articles online.
So, supporters, is this true? Detractors? |
Like yourself, I only know what I have heard online and over the years.
A decade ago, he said some pretty nasty things about an African-American woman in his newsletter. He later said he didn't write it (How do you publish a paper and not know what's written in it?) but apologized anyway. Then there was the incident in which he basically said all black males in Washington DC are fast because they're thieves. That was a while back too.
Most recently, hate groups like Stormfront have announced their support of Ron Paul's ideals and presidency. Even though they have fundamental disagreements with him and libertarianism in general. Paul's campaign staff aren't exactly thrilled to have their support, but they didn't stop and say "Ron Paul doesn't want your support".
As far as his supporters online go, I can't help you there. All I know is that they get banned from conservative blogs and forums a lot (Red State). Now that incident was pretty hilarious. |

Here are two articles that deal with that:

In short: a definite lapse of judgment but no, Paul's not a racist at all. The reason those remarks got published it because he wasn't paying enough attention to what ghostwriters were writing at the time for the magazine.
Here's Ron Paul during a recent debate on the question of race:

Ron Paul White House Bid Raises $4.5 Million
Sun Dec 16, 10:20 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, an anti-war libertarian who has clashed with his rivals over Iraq, raised a record $4.5 million in a one-day Internet fund-raising event on Sunday, his campaign said in a statement.
Paul's campaign said the Texas congressman had received more than 41,000 donations by early evening, shattering a $4.2 million record in a 24-hour period last month.
So far, the campaign has taken in over $16 million in the fourth quarter with two weeks remaining, the statement said

Paul still registers low in national polls of the November 2008 elections race, but routinely scores much higher in Internet surveys and snap polls taken after debates. |

Look, he still wants to dismantle the epa and the UN, nevermind even the most basic semblance of a welfare state.
Internet polls mean piddlyshit, and he does well absolutely nowhere else. |

Ron Paul's supporters set an all time record for funds raised for a primary candidate in a single day. The December 16th Boston Tea Party fundraiser raised over $6 million in 24 hours.
Surveys show that at least 25% of the general public agree with Ron Paul on general principles; that is, about a quarter of the general public fall in the libertarian quadrant on the political map.

I truly appreciate the anti-war on drugs/war on terrorism stance. Though I'm not convinced that his stance is due to an opposition to idealist "war" or simply isolationsist tendencies.
He's opposed to the drug war, but will he out and out legalize drugs? Or simply decriminalize them? I haven't been able to find anything he's specifically said one way or the other past 'drug war bad.'
Also, the primacy of individual property rights worries me in regards to public health/safety vis a vis the dumping/storage of harmful waste. Paul's hard stance in favor of private property rights seems to ignore the wide ranging impact of poorly regulated dumping/storage. And if litigation is limited by Paul what recourse would landowners who surround an environmental abuser have? What happens when one guy on a mountain clear cuts "his land" and causes a landslide that destroys the property of those below him on the mountain? Or worse, strip mines and pollutes an areas entire water table? |

More than 130,000 people have donated to Ron Paul in the 4th quarter. He has raised over $18,000,000 - not pledges, cash - in the 4th quarter. He could break $20,000,000.
Major advertising is set to run in Iowa, New Hampshire and all the early states.
People in those states will finally hear about Ron Paul.
The revolution is on. |

He's said he personally opposes drugs but he'd leave drug policy to the individual states. |

Who else on this board has given money to a candidate? I would be curious to know who put their money where their mouth is.
I gave $50 to Ron Paul, as I've stated earlier. Hope it doesn't get him in trouble, as I am a Canadian.
God Bless America, and no one else!
(The reason why I gave the money to Paul is he has the potential to change American foreign policy the most, which would make the world a safer place, IMO. Plus, if America goes bankrupt, it will be bad for us Canucks, as the Americans will have no choice but to overrun our borders, which are mostly guarded by grasshoppers. Our hockey sticks, tank, coast guard cutters (2, one for each coast, the northern ocean doesn't have one yet), 4 CF-16s, and shotguns will be no match for the guns you 'mericans possess. To conclude, Ron Paul, and freedom for all!) |
