From next year there will be a new essay writing section to the Korean teachers exam. Does anyone know anything about it? Is it going to be like a TOEFL essay? Standard 5 paragraph essay format? Is it going to be about education related topics, or just a regular EFL essay?

I'm going to be teaching English Education graduate students how to prepare for this portion of their test. But I don't know anything about it yet =) It will be included for the first time next year. Anyone know more than me?

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.. I guess I'll need to train them to write for a Korean audience haha. Maybe articles and subject-verb agreement won't matter =)

It will be multiple choice.

I have an example test here...its ten pages, and I bet most native speakers would have difficulty with it.......

the final question, the essay......

21. Read the statement below and follow the directions.

In Korea, female teachers outnumber male teachers in secondary schools. Therefore, to ensure that a certain proportion of male teachers be recruited, a quota system should be implemented.

Do you agree or disagree with the statement above? You must take one of the two positions. Write a paragraph in English supporting your position under the following guidelines.

- Include a topic sentence that clearly shows your position.
- Defend you position with two specific reasons.
- Provide elaborating details to support your reasons.
- Use neat handwriting.
- Use approximatley 100 words.

You are kidding, right? 100 words? I think the only challenge would be staying within the 100 words.

The only native speakers having difficulty with that question would be those who graduated from kho san road university or the like.

100 words? It's not an essay test, it's a paragraph test.

I helped an ex co-teacher with some of these teachers' test essays this year. It's harder than you think for a non-native speaker.

The 'essay' is indeed a paragraph - but it's not easy for them to condense a logical argument (supported by evidence sentences) into 100 words.

I teach academic writing to the more advanced speakers at my uni, and as we just inished our unit on opinion paragraphs, let me just say "No shit!"
