|
|
I am going to stay in Koh Phangan at the end of January and I am looking for the best place to stay. I want to party while I am there as well as enjoy the beaches with some peace and quiet.
Any advice would be great. I am a novice traveler to say the least. Thanks! |

Harmony Resort. Western owned and managed. Private beach, quiet relaxed and everyone has an open mind . Not too far from either of the major beaches either. Great little spot. Cheap too. |

Hat Rinn Beach is where they do the Full Moon parties. It's pretty much the epitome of crammed beach bungalows and beautiful scenery with tons of white flesh in every direction. Cheap food, cheap drinks, nothing was really great except some indian restaurant in town that used some spices so strong and hot it actually gave me an out of body experience.
If you're there for the full moon, it's good fun. Just be prepared to be swamped by drunken Europeans if you're not the drinking type, and be prepared for lousy drinks if you are the drinking type. Also, be sure to book a few days in advance, as the bungalows book up pretty quickly.
Otherwise, any place as far away from Hat Rinn should be a nice, albeit less party atmosphere. I stayed at a place way on the north-west beach that I cant remember the name for the life of me, and had a blast. Except for the rabid pack of dogs that decide to fight each other to the death at 4am directly below my bungalow.[/i] |

Ao Tong Nai Pan is about as far away from the Haad Rin scene as you can get, so if you want to see the absolute natural beauty of the island and chill without the widi-widi-beep-beep music and rampaging party crowds, go there. |

I stayed at Baan Panburi resort in Baan Panburi village. It was wonderful. beach front cottages, awesome restaurant and fresh food, and reasonable. the little village is also excellent. very laid back, quite a few foreign/thai owned bars. interesting week there. very free. not too many crazies, as they all wanna stay near the full moon beach. but met some very cool people, and had some interesting 'enlightened' evenings.
this was a few years ago, when I was still at Uni, and came over for a break.
but it was great. loved it.
and if the resort is not to suit, there are plenty of other little places in the village.
and there is diving there too, and boas for hire to take you about.

Anyway, I liked it there a lot. |

Aye, but Thon Nai Pan's days are numbered. We were there this past July and boats and jetskis now crowd the once quiet bay. A number of bungalow operations have also opened up and they've got a few more restaurants out back behind the beach and even a few ATMs. It's still nice, but in another year I probably will stop going there.
Go to Had Yao on the Western side --- quiet and beautiful beach with just a handful of bungalows and shallow water. Here are some piccies:

Thanks for the help it is very much appreciated. One more question. What is the best way to get to Koh phangan. I looked at tickets from Air Asia and it was roughly 50 dollards round trip to Surat Thani. Then a ferry boat next I believe. Is there an agency I can contact that will help me with the trip from BKK to Koh Phangan? |

Just walk over to Bankgok Air ticket window and get a ticket. |

Unfortunately, Ton Nai Pan's days really are numbered. It's changed a lot over the last few years. Still, it's the best place on Pha Ngan.
Had Yao beach is too shallow for swimming - at least that was my impression. You have to crawl over the rocky-like reef to get into water deep enough to swim. Or am I thinking of Mae Had? Still, nice place to spend a few days drinking.
You could also rent a bike and drive all over the island. |

Had Yaod is too shallow for swimming - but it's nice to just lay there in the water - it's really beautiful. Late in the day it's not as shallow. The g/f and I used to take late night dips and we could swim then. |
