|
|
There I was, walking along the sidewalk on this beautiful aftenoon, turning back every few steps to see if any taxis were approaching. I guess I turned back one time too late, because a taxi was now passing by on the inside lane...
Before I could raise my hand to wave at him, he inched over towards the shoulder lane and was clipped broadside by a faster car passing on his right. The taxi's front bumper went flying ahead and headlights shattered.
He must have not seen her in his blind spot, as he looked back at me, examining whether or not i needed him to stop.
So, the car that clipped him pulled over ahead in the shoulder lane, and he stopped right there in the passing lane.
Then -Screeech!-*BANG* the taxi was smacked from behind by a minivan.
Seeing the possible three-way finger pointing that may ensue, i decided to wait for the police and explain what I saw.
When the police arrived, i was astonished to hear that the minivan driver was blaming ME for hailing a taxi too close to an intersection.
He said i was causing confusion and a disturbance to drivers.
That's a new one for me. |

Yeah...like he's going to collect money because he says it was your fault. The guy is just looking for someone to blame other then himself. I'm not sure how it works here, but in Oregon if you hit someone from behind, most of the time it is the fault of the car behind you.
You should have asked him how fast he was going? I would be 50,000 won the guy was speeding.
ps-Glad to hear one or both cars didn't hit you. |

Thanks. Yeah, i know why he said what he said. Oddly, this is the third accident this month that i've actually witnessed happening.
I felt sorry for the taxi driver. He was an old man, and spoke politely in the aftermath. I wonder if he will somehow be blamed by the minivan for stopping in the inside lane. |

The Eye, I'm surprised you weren't taken into police custody for questioning. |

Me too and that he didn't get charged for causing the accident.
OP, why did you stick around, especially since there were no obvious injuries?
You know what, I made that mistake once back home and I ended up getting wrongly charged. Police in my state have to give a ticket to someone in every accident and they believed the other drivers instead of me. I learned my lesson. If the accidents are not my fault and they are just fender benders, I leave.
Over the past few weeks, I've seen a few accidents myself where the guys on the motorbikes were killed. At least you didn't see dead people laying in the street. I've seen three such accidents in the past several weeks. Two of the guys ended up dead and the other was in a lot of pain from a leg injury. |

What did the police say to you about the claim the other driver made?
Egads..I probably would have felt the same way. |

I hope you learnt your lesson. This is Korea, don't think your back home, don't try to do the right thing if you do, you'll get your butt kicked in. Lesson is, while in Korea, see nothing, hear nothing, know nothing and where is the closest exit. |

That's where my Korean skills failed me a bit. I really couldn't keep up with him, he was talking so fast... but he shook his head, and smirked a little at the guy, and didn't ask me anything accept to explain what i saw.

If the taxi driver bolted out of his cab screaming, i wouldn't have stayed. But he was old, and his cab wasn't well kept. This was probably the last thing he needed at his age, and I didn't want to see him get taken advantage of. |

If the cops got your name, I fully expect that within 2 months, you'll be billed for, and summarily ordered to report to court, and ordered to pay the damage to BOTH vehicles. |

I was hit by a car from behind last Saturday. He admitted fault and my car will be ready tomorrow. In the meantime I've had a rental car and been off work.
I was expecting bullshit but the guy was good about it. The crap I got was initially from the older cop who came to the scene. The younger cop talked to me first and politely asked for my driver's license.
The older cop came over next and just demanded my passport?! No please or anything, he looked pissed off. I wasn't in a mood to be jerked around around so I just glared at him and asked why I needed to show him my passport! Yeah every foreigner is a tourist right!! Stupid *beep*!!
You've definitely gotta be careful with cops. In my case the younger cop did his job properly, the older cop would've screwed me over if possible. I noticed he was all polite to the driver who rammed into me. |

by taking the blame, you can help the guys in the accident save face...the right thing to do. you can blame your actions on someone else so that you don't lose face. make sense? |

No. Change 'face' to 'money' and you'll get what this was about. |

In the rule book there is actually a law about passing on the right. It's an illegal move. |

I agree. I lways just do a little "Doo dee doo dee doo" and stroll along my merry way. I would've just caught the next cab. Hell, THAT'S WHAT A KOREAN WOULD DO!!!!
There could be body parts flying every which way, dying babies, explosions, and bloodbaths; but rest assured, a Korean pedestrian's task at hand takes precedence over any godforsaken event that may occur. Unless it involves family, of course. |
