Just curious here,

How do you flag down your cabbies here?

By raising your hand and waving (like home) or by using the local method of waving your hand at waist level?

Neither. I just stick my arm straight out. No waving, with arm, hand, or otherwise.

I stick out my arm and wave my fingers a bit. I'd feel like an ass just sticking my hand out. Of course, waving is a bit assy too.

I never took taxis back home, so not sure what I'd do there, probably the same thing.

I learnt how to hail a taxi in New York. Works here too.

Whenever possible I get my husband to do it for me, even if we have to leave 10 minutes early. I have had bad experiences. The first time I ever tried, I flagged one down - arm waving in the air - he stopped, looked at me and drove off, so I flagged down a second and same thing happened. I couldn't believe it. I now have a form of taxi flagging anxiety. I get all sweaty and nervous.

By the way I lived in Taiwan for two and a half years and never had a problem. The taxi drivers there taught me how to speak Chinese. The ones here won't even pick me up. Evil or Very Mad

This reminds me of a story from many years ago. When my wife, son and I returned to Korea back in '89, I didn't drive here (it was two years before I finally decided to), so we used public transportation, including taxis. One day, my son (then 3 y.o.) had a bad cold or something, so my wife decided to take him to the doctor. My son never enjoyed doctors as they always gave a shot no matter what he went there for.

My wife hailed a taxi, which is something my son would often see her do, so he knew well how it was done. Anyway, the two of them got in the cab and went to the clinic; my son did not know where they were going. However, when he got out of the taxi and recognized the clinic building, he quickly turned around, raised his hand and yelled, "Taxi!" Very Happy
