I fear that he won't be happy until vast swathes of Korea are leveled, sterilised and paved over. The Korean greenies and others are up in arms about his ridiculous canal plan and have pointed out all the hidden costs associated with the project. Long stretches of the Han and NakDong rivers are not nearly deep enough for the large container ships he envisages navigating them, so the canal/river system will require constant and costly dredging.
Remember, this is the guy who rushed the Cheonggyecheon restoration for political purposes and also took all the glory for 'Seoul Forest'. Koreans get all excited about visible, front window environmental improvements such as Cheonggyecheon then pretty much ignore massive scale environmental destruction, such as the Saemangeum land reclamation, out in the countryside.
Corporate friendly policies will probably mean less restrictions on developments. His plan for Nadeul island in the Han river estuary means another natural area of Korea is also likely to be completely buggered. |
