The Chiropractor Phillip Yoo hires Thai's to do massage. He is in the same building as the International Clinic. |

Unless things have changed in the last couple years, it is illegal for foreigners to work in Korea in the massage industry. Neither can foreigners own such a business. I was told this when I went to start up my own.
The rule was meant to prevent the eventual prostitution of foreign workers from Thailand, the Phillipines and the like. |

Yes, it is to protect the Koreans, it has nothing to do preventing the eventual prostitution of foreign girls. There are russian prostitutes in almost every city in Korea. Thailand, the Phillipines and China have also sent girls here to work. They enter on an entertainment VISA. The law that does not allow foreigners to OWN that kind of business is there to protect the Korean owners and no one else. And even that can be gotten around if you know the right people.
Besides, how can there be a law forbidding the ownership of a business that is illegal in the first place? That doesn't even make sense. Let's see
Article 1. Prostitution is illegal
Article 2. If a Korean wishes to own and operate a shop that deals in prostitution then article 1 should be ignored.
Article 3. If a foreigner living in Korea wishes to own and operate a shop that deals in prostitution, Article 1 is enforsable provided that said person does not own said business together with a Korean national. In which case, Article 1 should be ignored.

I wasn't looking to open up a place of prostitution. I was looking to open up a therapeutic massage clinic. I was told in no uncertain terms foreigners cannot own such a business, nor could I get visas for any foreigner that I would want to work there.
Yet another example of "Koreans will do this, so foreigners will also do this", never thinking that there are actual LEGITIMATE medical reasons to see a licenced massage therapist. Korean projection at its best. |

So in a thought, foreigners are not allowed to own such businesses as this risks turning them into places of prostitution instead of legitimate massage clinics, but on the other hand, Koreans are allowed to start up such businesses because the will only be used for the legitimate business of therapeutic massaging for sure. Because foreigners surely have the strong propensity of turning a professional massage clinic into a outpost of prostitution, they must not be trusted with such a business venture.  |

I am also a man. Still didn't stop the various govenment agencies from nixing my plans for a clinic. As a foreigner (males or female is irrelevant) it is illegal for me to own such a business. As a foreigner (male or female is irrelevant) they will not give me a visa to work in such a business.
I did not say Dr.Yoo was a pimp (before the thread tangented into that direction). I was questioning the legality of the Thais in his employ. To restate my first post, unless the laws have changed in the last couple years, the Thais at Dr.Yoo's are working in a business where they cannot legally obtain work visas.
[ and as an aside, the gender of the employees means nothing when it comes to pimping...men can be whored out just as much as women can ] |
