Well, Tolkien talks about elves. There are no elves. Ergo, there's no value in reading his works.

Prove it. The reason you haven't seen them documented yet is because they're too tricky.

And Gandalf is helping them.

Amazing.................religious nontolerence at its finest.......here on Dave's.

Just when I think my life is in the crapper, I read what you guys spew out. What is it like to not have faith in anything, pretending to be higher then others? What is it like to down someone for reading the bible, or even talking about the bible?

Seems OK to support Muslims, the Korahn and other religiions....even non religion..........but when it comes to Christianity, its another story.

C''mon......lets here how enlightened most of you are and slam me for the post.

Right, and next you're going to tell me that halflings actually walk among us and the Dwarves aren't around only because of genocide.

Actually, I do believe in elves re: the documentary Ernest Saves Christmas.

But you'll notice Tolkien glorifies the elves. Quid bono?

What is it like to live at the centre of the universe? Where everything was created for little old you. Where the most powerful being in the universe actually cares who wins the super bowl and what hole you put it in.

By "not have faith in anything" do mean not believe in fairytale? It's great!
I have faith in the people around, in friends and loved ones and I hold great wonder in life the universe and everything.

Religious tolerance, but not for the Muslims.

I'm not a fan of any religiiiiion. But I'm from a Christian country, that is my background, it is what I'm most familiar with. So it is first in my sights. I have never been a fan of Islam.

If someone believes Genesis is true word for word they deserve no respect. If they believe the bible is a guide to morality they should really read more books. Simpsons is a better moral guide than the bible. If people bring their irrational beliefs here to Dave's or any other public forum they open themselves to ridicule.

Once I have your patience and tolerance for others I'm sure the anger will leave my tortured empty soul.

Honestly, I didn't see much if any religious intolerance in this thread. It's much more tolerant than many others that used to sprout up on Dave's.

I'd like to hear the kids singing that "I'm unique and unrepeatable" song to the tune of Ten Little Indians. They'd have to repeat that line a lot.

That's an adequate definition. I wonder if that's what they really teach!

I would hope so. Logical fallacies are pretty central to critical thinking.

A lot of atheists are angry about Christainity. It's understandable really. A lot of people devote time and energy into their religion and if they come to the realisation that there's nothing behind the door a bit of anger is a natural response. When one bumps into people proselytizing it's annoying. I also get angry at people trying to sneak religion into science class and who call evolution religion.

But for the majority of Christains it's nothing more than their personal choice. In that case I even enjoy a rigorous exchange of views.

yeah, as an atheist who was brought up christian i have a short fuse w/ proslythizers. the same for drunk drivers and child abusers. they are sentinent beings who have given over their critical thinking skills to a lower, more base source of gratification.

all we have is each other, right now, right here.

Your thread title= atheist sunday school

To me that, and the discussion you follow with, implies that children are being taught atheism.

However, I don't see any evidence of atheism being taught here.

For the record, I don't want atheism to be taught to anybody. Rather, I'd prefer people to come to their own conclusions.

To my knowledge, Ten Little Indians isn't an atheist hymn. The little snippet you provide suggests that:

Quote:
instead of traditional Sunday-school songs like Jesus Loves Me

there is something wrong with that.

Do you have a problem with children going to school on the weekend if it isn't in support of Christianity?

That's the point I see.

Quote:
I want my children to learn the Bible because American literature is impossible to appreciate without an understanding of it.

Oh really? Is that what's taught in AmCiv and AmLit classes? I've encountered Genesis, Job, and Revelations in formal studies. Ecclesiastes and some other bits along the way.

I don't see how they are essential to appreciating American literature.

Rather,I'd say growing up in a Christian society suffices for me to be able to appreciate the likes of Huckleberry Finn.

In fact, I think it suffices to appreciate even The Scarlet Letter.

Is this more something akin to your suggestion elsewhere that we need religion in order to have morality?

Are you honestly saying you want your children to read the Bible for literary reasons while you start a thread called "Atheist Sunday School"?

we had to read greek and roman myths in my jesuit high school for the same reason: knowledge of them were important cultural touch stones. no stock was put in the historical value of such, but rather they were nice, relevant stories to know.

and they, like bible questions, of come up in trivia nights and are easy points for the adeptii.
