A Korean teacher I know is creating lessons for a company and asked me to help with general editing, classroom English, and cultural advice (the main area), and she asked me how much I would need to do it.

I don't know how much she's making, and probably couldn't ask that question anyways. She's talking about 2 hours per week or so. How do I ballpark this?

You have two basic choices here if this is a serious consulting job.

Option A:

You ask for an hourly rate based on what other people doing this type of editing with your kind of experience make. You agree to a certain number of hours and about how payment will be made. Then you check if you can legally do this (your visa might prohibit this).

Option B:

You ask for a lump sum payment (half now, half when you are done). Again you need to check what this type of payment is like for similar type jobs for people with your experience. You will also need to check if you can do this under your work visa (is it legal?).

Asking for royalties on sales for an editing job like this will earn you a rebuff because you are not the author or creator of the material, you will just be the revisor.

Also, it is entirely possible the author is not getting royalties and is simply working on a contract with a set payment.

This last bit will have a direct impact on how much you can get. If for example your co-worker decided to do this on the cheap to get her name in the industry and get subsequent contracts, then asking for too much will be useless.
